Penetrating Pittsburgh

Ive been in Pittsburgh for four months now and have explored most of southwest PA and the surrounding areas, so heres some photos from the past few months.

Heinz Lofts and the North Shore under the full moon tonight.

The Southside

Cathedral of Learning from Carnegie Mellons lawn

Downtown Pittsburgh.

Ohiopyle

Ohiopyle State Park way south of Pittsburgh, almost into WV.

The Southside of Pittsburgh.

An incredible railroad bridge in Beaver about an hour west of Pittsburgh along the Ohio

Ohiopyle

The tiny town of Ligonier an hour east of Pittsburgh

The dying river town of Donora southeast of Pittsburgh.

PPG Place downtown

Millvale, where I live now in Pittsburgh.

One of the last bad streets in Lawrencville that hasnt been gentrified yet.

A random huge church out in the middle of nowhere near Uniontown south of Pittsburgh

Owner of one of the Italian cafes in the Strip, dude always has a cigar in his mouth.

North Shore ghetto

A very well preserved Gothic Revival house in Butler, an hour north of the city.

Pittsburgh Gay Pride Parade from last weekend

Recently torn down mid 1800s row homes in Manchester

My ex looking at one of Van Gogh's last paintings before he committed suicide in July 1890.

California Kirkbride neighborhood

Manchester neighborhood which is gentrifying in certain areas, while other areas of this once beautiful neighborhood are quickly getting torn down.

One of the gentrified streets in Manchester with beautiful restorations.

Lawrencville

Also Larwencville

An abandoned school in East Liberty, which is luckily seeing a lot of gentrification and renewal.

The Southside

Southside

Johnstown, which was devestated in a late 1800s flood, about 2 hours east of Pittsburgh in the mountains.

Fort Necessity National Battlefield, this is where the Seven Years War pretty much started in July of 1754. Its about 2 hours south of Pittsburgh.

This is the completely abandoned downtown of Brownsville, about an hour southwest of Pittsburgh.

The little brown building on the right of the photo is one of the oldest buildings left in downtown Pittsburgh, I believe it was built around 1830 or so.

Penguins Fans

Wilkensburg, the furthest east urban neighborhood, then its the suburbs after that.

The abandoned Carrie Furnace, built in the early 1900s, its one of the last steel blast furnaces left in the country.

Carrie Furnace

Homestead

Casrson St. on the Southside

An abandoned church in East Liberty

The Hill neighborhood just east of downtown, used to be one of the densest and most historic neighborhoods in the city, today its vastly destroyed.

More of the Hill

Manchester again.

Manchester

A now torn down 1850s house in Manchester

An abandoned 1870s railroad hotel in Apollo, a small town about an hour east of Pittsburgh

Lawrencville neighborhood, this is where all the hipsters live.

An abandoned house in Manchester

The small town of Harmony about 45 min north of Pittsburgh, most of the buildings in this photo date from 1809-1811.

McConnels Mill State Park with its 1870s covered bridge.

New Castle, about an hour and a half northwest of Pittsburgh.

An incredible Italianate house in New Brighton.

Beaver Falls

Looking at Rochester PA, along the Ohio River downstream from Pittsburgh

Monaca and Rochester

Ive posted this photo before in my first Pittsburgh thread, but this is pretty much the first photo I took of Pittsburgh within the first few minutes of being in the city from Mt. Washington.

I want to get all the seasons in there, and it takes a lot of research for what Im doing. Plus Im kind of waiting to get my 14-24 fixed, Ive really only been using two lenses sense Ive been here, my 50mm and 70-200 so its been kind of limiting me in which photos I can take. I just sent my 14-24 off and I expect it to be at least a grand to fix, so that sucks.

The "huge random church" is actually St. Vincent College, a catholic university in Latrobe.

Just an FYI, Wilkinsburg is actually a suburb of Pittsburgh (though certainly not a traditional one!).

Great shots!

Well, not a post war suburb, its continuous urbanism from downtown all the way to Wilkensburg pretty much, then the post war suburbs start after that, and then its Monroeville and whatnot.

Your penetration has been deep and energetic. Lawrenceville has changed a great deal, if you could have seen the neighborhood 10 years ago the last thing you'd call it is a hipster neighborhood. Its went from rough and tumble to hipster in the past few years.

Yeah, Larwencville was basically like where Im living now, across the river in Millvale, pretty white trash. Larwencville still has a ways to go in a lot of areas, but its rapidly changing.

This is one of the best threads I've seen on SSP, there were a lot of interesting angles in here.

PhotoLith,

Huge Kudos! Great set of photos, love them. Always admired Houston's post 1960s urbanism and glad to see a native Houstonian enjoying a city that is just a beautiful but perhaps in a completely different way/era.

Really enjoyed these and can't wait for your next update!

I feel like I need to comment here, but I think everyone else has pretty much taken the words right out of my mouth. Those shots are stunning, dude!
