Remember that outburst I had about people in St. John's not knowing where shit is and asking "Where's that?" on pictures of the most obvious locations in our fair city?

Noirish.

The lights shone in the rainy street like a blurry carnival for drunks and cheap hookers. Patty had the kids. Mike had Patty. And I had nowhere to go. The money from the investments was gone. The company was dead. I had ten dollars and change, enough for a ham sandwich and some eggs.

This pain in my leg was getting worse, but there was nowhere to sit down. I shouldn't have pretended I knew jiu-jitsu. Actually, I shouldn't have pretended I knew that blonde with the big eyes and the even bigger laugh. You could tell she was trouble. The rich uncle story was a dead giveaway. But I was desperate for something, anything, to get me out of my slump. All my dreams had turned into dead ends in this city.

It was time to go home and start over.

Nearby cities like Guelph, Galt and Stratford are probably better representations of the urban form than KW - just my opinion, though.

I don't want this to get personal - I like KW and there are some good things happening there - but in terms of urban form, I find KW a little lacking. The other places I mentioned have more nooks and crannies and interesting little side streets to investigate. Once you stray off King St, there's very little to see. And then there's the architecture of those other cities - KW doesn't match up very well. The good news is KW's booming and LRT will only improve the situation.

Next time you're in Kitchener in good weather, leave King St and take a wander down to (beautiful) Victoria Park and then head up Queen Street to the KPL (currently undergoing a major expansion), the Civic District and CITS/KWAG. Downtown is indeed very linear, but it is slowly "thickening". If it's sustained, the high tech boom and development of the Innovation District should help considerably, as will more new residential projects in the Downtown. Guelph, Cambridge (Galt) and Stratford have more attractive urban cores and have their respective advantages, but they lack K-W's energy, which is really what defines this town these days.

Definitely. KW is on the verge of some great things (from an urban standpoint). I'm quite curious to see what it will look like in 20 years.
