Your favourite New York Art Deco skyscraper?

I'll go for the General Electric Building aka 570 Lexington Avenue and the Chrysler Building. They are both just gorgeous.

Why isn't the Woolworth Building, Metlife Building, or Helmsley Building on that list. To do a true 'Best Art Deco List', I think you should go all out and put the major ones on the list. Then put some minor, and leave the rest in other. My choice would have to be between Empire State, Chrysler, Woolworth, and 570 Lexington.

the Woolworth Building built in 1911-1913 is NOT art deco (it is considered Gothic in style) .....the art deco movement happened during the 1920's 30's 40's....

The Metropolitan Insurance Company tower (built in 1909) is not art deco as well, the style is Italian renassaince...it was the tallest building in the world until the Woolworth Building surpassed it in 1913!

Trying to pick my favorite Art Deco building is like trying to pick a favorite ice cream flavor, but I'm going with the American Radiator Building for that eye-popping color scheme.

I know that. That's their main style. Who said a building for example built in the Setback Style can't have characteristics of or fully be Art Deco. Just like both building above aren't fully Art Deco, they have characteristics here and there. The lobby of the Woolworth is a good example.

While not "Art Deco"
40 Wall Street is a personal favorite of mine and one I feel is sadly neglected amongst the City.
The tower was brushed aside in history for being just slightly shorter then the Chrysler Building. The poor thing was all but abandoned in the 1980's and was only saved by being bought up by Donald Trump of all people.

The fact that it ISN'T Art Deco is actually what makes it so special for me. As for as I know, no other Tower was constructed nearly as big as it that WASN'T art Deco at the time.

Forgive my oversight, you are correct, the over all structure IS Art Deco, I guess for me, the top and crown of the building always seemed much more Neo Gothic then Art Deco in terms of it's ornamentation. Looking at the top of 40 Wall Street reminds me much more of, oh so the top of the Woolworth Building then most other examples of NYC Art Deco.

Just MHO of course. How would you define it, out of genuine curiosity?

No doubt the Chrysler Building is leaps and bounds above all others, but NY's collection of Art Deco (and Neo-Deco) skyscrapers in general is unmatched anywhere in the world.

the first time I went to NYC, the band I was with stayed at the Roger Smith Hotel, which is in the shadows of the Chrysler Building.

The last night we were there, the hotel staff had a little BBQ for us up on the hotel's roof. Sitting there among all the skyscraper pron, looking up at the Chrysler Building is something I'll never forget.

Every time since then when we had an overnight in NYC, we stayed at the Marriott by EWR. It just ain't the same!

Neither the Woolworth, Helmsley, or Metlife buildings are deco.

ESB...I'm a sizequeen...I can't help it.

Chrysler Building is prettier, but it simply does not have the presence the ESB has due to its smaller size.

It's not on your list (for whatever reason) but my vote goes to the original 1930's section of Rockefeller Center.

Namely GE Building, Radio City Music Hall, and the central plaza.
