Masonic Centre Tower | 1495 W.8th Ave. | 18 Floors | Completed

Maybe I'm jumping the gun on this as its just a rezoning application proposal, but I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't go ahead given the location.

18 floors in that neighbourhood is great! The restaurant will also bring some life to that rather dead area.

^ according to the development panel posted above, it looks like it's not included in the site.

Why that building is not designated as a heritage building is beyond me. So many other shorter buildings that a new 18 storey building can replace, and it has to be a nice character apartment. I blame it on the rigid density zoning policy.

Just look at those wood shacks west of the site along Granville Street. Those should be the ones to be replaced.

I dont know if I am missing something here but that is what it looks like to me too. It seems that this development is where the masonic centre is and the empty lot behind it on 8th.

Well guys you're in luck! According to the site plan found here the small building at 1455 W 8th will remain, the tower is being built on the empty area to the west of the old building

But they are going to demolish that concrete bunker on 7th that reminds me of a Nazi Flak tower?

Open House Model

I've meant to post these for a while and was finally motivated by tomorrow's public hearing. These are from the open house in May 2016.

Speaking to a staff member from the city today, they were sure that the rezoning was almost guaranteed to pass at tomorrow's public hearing.

Down she goes (very slowly). They seem to be taking a long time to demo the Masonic Centre. What a beast, where does all that concrete end up? can you imagine living in that old apartment building right next to this site?

That building is empty due to rennovations so good timing.

Progress is slow for the demolition a lot of things came up to delay it.

Which is one more way that the bureaucrats diminish the livability of this place by prohibiting controlled implosion. Get the damn thing over with in a compressed time period, or live next to D-Day for what feels like forever. It's a joke that the parkades downtown could not be imploded.

World's most livable city? Don't make me laugh.

Could they implode that, given that it touches on two buildings?

I believe all the concrete is eventually crushed down into small aggregate and some even get crushed back into a powder that is used for roads and in new concrete. I believe The City of Vancouver at their Kent Ave work yard does this with the concrete from jobs around the city for example. They also separate the rebar which can be resold as scrap metal to be turned back into new rebar once again for new buildings.

With the current method there is still large chunks accidentally falling down next door. I believe they first wanted to implode but it was built too sturdy to do it, I think this is the third choice after the first two were infeasible.

Interesting, I wonder if the Masons own the old rental building.
