The pub in the basement of the Hotel Saskatchewan was called the Coach Room. It closed sometime in the 1980's, prior to the hotel's major renovation in 1990.

I received a postcard from a friend the other day. It showed the renovated La Salle Hotel (sometime in the early 50's). Does anyone know what street that hotel was on? And is there any of those buildings left?

The LaSalle Hotel was located on the 1800 block of Hamilton Street (west side). None of those building on the west side of this block exist today as they were demolished at various times. This block is now home to Hill Tower III, the new Agriculture Place tower with its Shoppes on Hamilton, as well as the FCC Tower.

I remember the old Coach Room. You actually went down a few steps from Victoria Ave to the entrance. In those days it was kind of a hippie bar.

The Red Lion at the Drake had a bit of a rougher hewn crowd. I worked at the Drake from when I was 15 to 19. Not in the pub itself, but I still remember a pretty interesting crowd passing through the lobby.

I vaguely recall the pubs at the Georgia and LaSalle but can't remember their names. Anyone out there recall?

I don't recall the Captain's Mug being around very long. I just recall it was pretty big. I think it was only around a few years before they converted it to a dinner theatre.

And let's not forget the Plains. I remember the free popcorn and the story was that it was over-salted so you would buy more beer.

As we all now know that Florence Henderson passed away yesterday.

Do any of you remember the fact that she did a commercial for Caskie Furriers during 1977-78? Also, Henry Jones did a commercial for Gryphon's Walk at that time as well.

Regina sure had some heavy hitters for advertisements in those days!

I remember the Caskie ad.

As far as Henry Jones I'm pretty sure he came to town for a run at Stage West. For those who don't remember, Stage West was a dinner theatre in the Regina Inn that featured plays headlined by familiar TV stars. People like Gale Gordon (The Lucy Show), Dawn Wells (Gilligan's Island), Nancy Kulp (Beverly Hillbillies), and of course Sid Caesar who froze up on stage and had to be admitted to hospital, later attributing it to substance abuse and crediting the Regina doctors with saving his life.

The club was called Shades, used to DJ there for the short time it was in existence

Wink

I just saw your post and question. Not even sure you'll see the answer after all these years, but yes, there indeed was a convenience store on 15th between Robinson and Retallack. It was called 'Joe's'...or 'Joe's Corner Store'...something with that name in it, but we always just called it JOE'S.

I'm in my mid 50's but I have many wonderful memories of walking down to Joe's to buy some candy, ice cream, or pop when I was a little girl. My grandparents lived at 2249 Robinson...so Joe's was just a hop, skip, and a jump away. I'm not sure when it closed down. My grandmother moved away after my grandfather passed in 1985. The last time I visited (to take a walk down memory lane in 2000) I think the corner store may have had already closed down...and I was kind of disappointed. lol

Yeah, the way he designed it with the tree in the way and all, is a little screwy but, it was an awesome store in it's day...and Joe certainly had his fair share of daily customers.

This is from the If You Grew Up In Regina Facebook page:

The one on 15th was the Starlite confectionary. Owned by Joe Fuchs and his Wife. They lived in the house that faced Robinson St and the store sat behind it on 15th ave. we could buy smokes there.

Pretty sure the building is still there:

For those of you so inclined, there's an Instagram account which is fairly active sharing a whole bunch of pictures from Regina's past.

My goodness, I am awash on a wave of nostalgia. The old B/A gas station (anyone remember Royalite?), Bell bottoms, I think I knew all the people in the picture of the U of R, the old style liquor stores, Golden Gate confectionary owned by Mr. & Mrs. Wong (one of their granddaughters was my high school sweetheart), Golden Plaza restaurant (always thought they had the best pizza), and so forth.

Is the totem pole still there?

Also, whatever happened to the old locomotive that used to be in front of the armory down by the exhibition grounds.

I don't think this one in front of the Casino is the same one?

Hey this webgram site is great with new pictures coming in every day. How can I contact them? They posted a new picture late May 17 showing a guy with an absurd beard lecturing at U of R. Caption says U of R 1970's, but it was 1982. I was teaching intro accounting. Still have a beard, but much more respectable looking. Miss the jacket with leather patches on the elbows.
