The design is cheap, but New York is in desperate need of holiday inn budget hotels.

I haven't seen that yet either. But it can't be worse than the previous renderings.

Its Gene Kaufman, so it'll be an abomination. No question about that.

No kidding. There are single family mansions near my hometown in the Detroit suburbs that also cost more than this entire skyscraper.

Hell no. I grew up in Bloomfield Hills, which has easily the highest home prices in Metro Detroit, and I don't even think there's even been a $10 million sale.

In Bloomfield, you can buy a really, really huge estate now for under $4 million. You can buy a regular mansion for $1-$2 million. This hotel, now that it's enlarged and the floor count increased, will probably cost north of $80 million.

You're right. The original price cited in this thread was higher than I remember.

But still. $80,000,000 is less than One57's top floor.

World's tallest Holiday Inn to rise in New York City

By Barbara De Lollis
4/18/12

Quote:
A 50-story Holiday Inn hotel tower under construction in Lower Manhattan near the World Trade Center is slated to become the chain's tallest hotel in the world, HotelChatter.com reported recently.

The 400-room hotel now under construction at 99 Washington Street will be about 448-feet tall, a senior InterContinental Hotels Group executive tells USA TODAY.

The high-profile project is the latest sign that this part of New York continues to grow as an attraction to investors, employers and travelers alike.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON WORLD'S TALLEST HOLIDAY INN

April 6, 2012

Quote:
Construction is under way on the world's tallest Holiday Inn — a 50-story hotel at 99 Washington St. in New York City. Designed by Gene Kaufman Architects (GKA), the 400-room hotel is situated just three blocks south of the World Trade Center site and is slated to play a role in the ongoing recovery of Lower Manhattan. McSam Hotel Group is developing the property.

Now we can officially vomit...

Wow seriously? If they just made it one color we could forget about it... but instead they had to broadcast their crappy design across the city with their zebra stripes.

I wanna stay in the world's tallest Holiday Inn!

Seriously, if I come to NYC that's where I want to stay ... so I don't have to see it.

We can hardly judge the building just yet, that model looks like it was done in SketchUp in about ten minutes. Let's wait until we see a proper rendering before we all jump on it.

If it comes out about as bland as 8 Stone, this won't be an issue. There's plans for pretty tall development all the way around this building, all of it more interesting.

^^ Thanks for the update.

Washington Street is getting uglier by the day, first 123, now this POS.
Last hope would be 111....

I like 123. It will surely be the best of the three. That said, 50 West abuts Washington, and even the new renders make it look awesome. The Greenwich south redevelopment will also abut Washington, and 5 WTC (when it happens) is also on Washington. All in all, I don't think it'll be a total loss for what's a rather short and inconsequential street (those other buildings have addresses not on Washington after all).

It really is amazing, Gene Kaufman is completely incapable of designing anything even remotely decent. Thank god this is only 450 feet, calling him an architect isn't fair to the Norman Fosters of the world.

As the WTC continues to be built out, along with the area south of it including 50 West, this will increasingly become mere fill which makes it decent fill I suppose, but still I would've preferred a completely generic glass box.

Gwathmey Siegel did the exterior for the reesign, although they could just be the architect of record.
