Yeah, it looks more Japanese than Chinese to me.

I agree that the materials used, and the level of attention spent on the smaller details, will either make or break this building. I doubt they'll spend the money needed to make it look decent, maybe it can get by on camp value. So I guess I like it as a PoMo building, but only ironically

I'm all for it. The developer has a huge amount of projects for Chinatown, hopefully they'll be done well.

Sorry to disagree with everyone, but I think it is awful. Pure, unadulterated kitch. These types of awkward attempts to fit into Chinatown are not rare in North America. Here is one in Montreal:

And I seem to remember a ghastly Holiday Inn in San Francisco Chinatown, back in the early 70's....hope it got imploded.

i agree, this one will be so completely ridiculous that it'll actually be kinda cool. it won't be good-good, it'll be bad-good, but that's still better than bland-o-rama.

well, if you break it down to its elements, it's a pretty good building outside of the Pagoda look. The rooms all have big windows and Juliet balconies, and it looks like there's some interesting large spaces on the top floors. If you take off the gingerbread, it's a Chicago-school building.

The plaza surrounding the edifice is too large and sterile.

Those renderings are incredibly inaccurate, with the exception of the building itself.

I like this building a lot. I don't even think it's bad-good, just good-good. It's well proportioned and interesting.

I like at all. The thing that makes a city architecture very uncommon and interesting is different structures together. So if it would be in China, nobody cares, because other same old structures are side by side, but in cities with different styles, make the city better to be seen. I like it unfortunatly is not in cities I live. Do you know if has already diagram for it????????

when i first saw this picture i thought it was some tacky attempt at mingling capitalist modernity with traditional Chinese methods and motifs, the kind of kitsch you see in emergent economies such as Russia and Dubai.

Then i read it was planned for a Chinatown and viewed the building in a completely different manner. Chinatowns have never been populated by authentic chinese structures. the fact that they are displaced/emigre communities working with the skills, prejudices and environments of an alien culture means that "chinatown" architecture will always be an approximation or a pastiche or kitsch. But that's fine - no-one looks at pagodas, pavilians, archways or verandas in global chinatowns and complains that they are kitsch, cos that architecture is an established type befitting a very pecuilar situation. in every chinatown you'll also see masses of vernacular architecture that has been crudely modified with cheap chinese additions. but it's all part of the fun and serves to identify that particular quarter of the city, and so does this, so i have no problem with it.

Love it. It'll just add to the character, whether or not it's good. And if it is good...then we just have an all around winner.
