Buckhannon (pop. 5,725) is the seat of Upshur County (23,404) and is located in north-central West Virginia about 140 miles south of Pittsburgh and 115 miles northeast of Charleston WV. Buckhannon has an urban cluster population of 9,079. The city is situated in the rugged Allegheny Plateau along the Buckhannon River.
Buckhannon was founded in 1816. It is close to the Sago Mine Disaster... which claimed 12 coal miners in 2006. Buckhannon is home to West Virginia Wesleyen College... which unfortunately eluded me during my explorations.
Downtown Buckhannon was pretty lively and attractive... smooth jazz flooded the street
Upshur County Courthouse was built in 1901
really excellent coffeeshop
there were yard sales everywhere in Buckhannon... seemed like a huge social/economic event
Buckhannon's residential stock may not have been the most interesting... but I found the town's neighborhoods to be extremely pleasant and comfortable
sadly the Confederate Flag was a pretty common sight across North-Central West Virginia... I guess West Virginians regret seceding from Virginia and the Confederacy... also a bit strange to see the flag next to a couple hippie icons
An aqua-blue church, old school DQ, and a solid downtown, what's not to like?

I hereby declare August 10th to be West Virginia Day on SSP. Too bad I got rained out of photographing Beckley, our combined coverage of the Mountaineer State is lesser for it.

What a nice little surprise this was. Great looking downtown and nice housing. Good to see a healthy town in WV (and that's not a knock on the state, I like WV). Thanks Eg.

Been there! Nice little town, with the exception of the symbol of ultimate still-extant ignorance. Saw it flying a few times when I was recently down in the Buckhannon area. Love it when many of my West Virginian friends try to justify the confederate flag, because we just don't understand what it "represents".
Great post! Great city! This is my hometown. Buckhannon is a bustling town and it's continuing to grow (which is unusual for Small Town West Virginia). I really wish you had the chance to take some photos of West Virginia Wesleyan College. It's by far the most beautiful college campus in the state! I guess that will have to wait for another trip!
