10 year old Colorado pictures, part 1: Denver

When I was in school at the University of Colorado from 2000-2003 I took a lot of pictures around the Front Range. I recently ran across them on my hard drive, and uploaded some of them to flickr. These were probably all posted in photo threads here when they were new, but it's been a decade so why not share them again?

This will be a multi-part series. For part one, here are pictures from Denver.

I don't remember what building this is taken from. One of the Denver forumers can probably figure it out. Note the old convention center in the background, which is not there anymore.

A never-built skyscraper called El Jebel Tower.

Denver is no mere cow town. It's a bovine metropolis.

Mandatory pavilions sign picture. Wolfgang Puck's restaurant isn't there anymore.

Yes, this is Denver, not Cleveland.

Market Square. Still there I think, but not for too much longer.

Skyline Park. It has since been rebuilt and is now more of a lawn.

Five Points neighborhood:

I wonder if these are still in disrepair.

Golden Triangle neighborhood:

Highlands neighborhood:

Trippy one-story rowhouses. Weird.

Rowhouses are rare. Most of inner Denver is this:

Larimer Square:

LoDo neighborhood:

A park in Stapleton:

This is from Cherry Creek, an uptown area.

Goofy-looking rowhouses in Cherry Creek.

Colfax Avenue:

And finally, demolition of the old Mile High Stadium, with the new stadium behind:

Amazing to see what has changed, both the town and the camera tech. I got my first digital camera in 2000?? An Olympus 1.2 megapixel, shiny beige brick. That thing was cutting edge. If I recall I stumbled across the El Jebel proposal on this site back in 03ish. Cool to see some old shots.

Bovine Metropolis - that is funny. And the PC way to say hillbilly, is Mountain William.

Anyway, very interesting to peek back into history. Even if it is only 10 years back.

Thanks for the very interesting look into the recent past. I think it would have more meaning had I visited Denver in 2001, but I still find it quite interesting nonetheless.

Regarding the apartments in disrepair in Five Points. They are no longer in disrepair and have been under major renovation. When Charlie Cousins finally passed on, his holdings have been either sold or they have finally seen restoration attention.

Let's see what I can do here...

This has to be from the U.S. Bank tower. No idea how you got up there, though. Sneaky! Currigan Hall is already demo'd when you took this. That makes this very late 2001, or early 2002? Neat.

At some point over the last week or two (anybody?) they added new LED light-up boards up on the third level latticework next to the Denver sign. Good reminder, I wanted to post a picture of that!

They're not too bad. I don't think they've gotten a face lift per se, but they seem better maintained. Can't say the same for the very similar ones 2 blocks away on Park. Those were torn down; nothing replaced them yet but weeds. But that area's getting pricier every year. And some really nice contemporary rowhouse units have been developed the next block over.

This is completely different, or will be. Long debate over how to re-do Fillmore Plaza. The final plan actually includes re-introducing traffic to the block. Plan here: http://cherrycreeknorth.com/images/u...erspective.pdf

"A never-built skyscraper called El Jebel Tower."

Good lord I remember the hubbub about that - almost as bad as the Trango Tower proposal.

Haha, I think generally we've learned not to take any proposal seriously until it's far enough along to shed its kitschy foreign mountain-inspired moniker.

Jebel - Arabic for mountain (I know, I know, it's the name of the adjoining temple; they can get away with it, a $300m project can't )
Trango - an actual Pakistani mountain

It's a miracle the Spire got built. Only because nobody made the mountain reference probably.

You mean the one you were supposed to lead, bailed on, and left me to be in charge of? Yeah, I think so. Here is the full-size version. I would say that from left to right that is Gina Begly (white sweater), Brooke Alquist (blue top), older guy from a different class who I can't name, Jeff _____* (black polo), and a random passer-by at far right.

* The Jeff who always hung out with Josh Cox. This guy.

How's this for nostalgia? Here is an entire folder of old studio + old field trip pics.

In this one I'd say you're getting Jeff, Josh, and Gina again, plus Chris Wyatt in the green shirt and professor Dwayne ______. What was his last name? He was my favorite.

Dwayne Nuzum... He died a few years ago.

Ah right, I bailed, haha. Can't remember why. That's okay, I am sure the group benefited more from of a dose of your skepticism. You were the Oracle of Stapleton, after all.
