there are actually quite a few restaurants opening up along Marine Parade Drive now at the base of all the new condos - in 5 years there will probably be a strip of 10+ restaurants with generous patios looking over the lake.

The former Mr Christie site looks like it'll be the community hub however - First Capital is looking to build a half-decent amount of commercial and retail there as well as some residential.

Nice! For some reason that street feels like it's missing something and I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's the lack of grit or clutter that I'm used to.

Calgary's downtown is exceptionally clean and modern. So much so that the Central Business District feels heartless in most areas. Beauty at the expense of soul.

^That's especially true of 7th avenue though - the combination of the transit mall and main pedestrian street being a block south makes it feel especially quiet.

Plus it being winter doesn't help. As more condos go up in and around the core that will all change. It won't take very long.

They even had the sense to put the trees between the sidewalk and road. If that were Toronto they'd put the sidewalk next to the road which speaks volumes about how little thought goes into it.

I read somewhere that Calgary is Canada's cleanest city. That's nothing to denigrate. A city doesn't need rampant filth or tagging to have soul or character. To my consternation, Toronto isn't as clean as it used to be.

Exactly what I think.

I'd say Ottawa and Calgary are Canada's cleanest cities. Trash and garbage don't add character at all. While Edmonton's downtown core is getting cleaner, there are still some areas full of trash and it just creates an instant negative reaction from me.

That's not it. I walk 10 km to and from work everyday and Toronto is very clean. But it is gritty. There is a big difference. You won't find trash on roads or sidewalks here but you will find urban decay, rundown next to brand new, poverty next to the ultra rich. It's busy though. Even the side streets that lack retail still buzz. I think Calgary will be the next city to reach that point and we will no longer say The Big 3 but the Big 4.

To a Torontonian, that view is conspicuously free of signage and may feel a little alien. Except for "Field law" and that yellow clearance sign on the +15 bridge, there's nothing to read in that whole picture.

It's not 17th or 4th. It's Calgary's CBD. It's not that different from Toronto CBD. The major subtleties are fewer wires, fewer poles and different lighting. Calgary has many different light standards but, I find that most are a light on top of a pole. They don't have a long arm projected over the street which adds to the clutter in Toronto. 17th and 4th remind me a lot of Danforth Avenue. Similar make up of architectural eras comprising a mix of strip plazas and street front retail with no discernible above ground wires.
