Agreed. With it being State managed I am not hopefully that the State will do much more than add some trees. I would like to see the speed limit lowered, lanes narrowed, separated bike paths, trees and mass transit added. I would be fine with a streecar or BRT.

They definitely need to narrow it. There's no reason for the street to be three-lanes both ways. That's basically a highway going right down the heart of our CBD. I'd love to see it narrowed like they did with Main Street, which was the same size across as State back in the day.

There was much discussion about this, though at this point it is probably more than 12 pages back. Don't worry, a project announcement like that wouldn't slip by us.

I'm glad the fairpark is not being seriously considered. This would be a tremendous thing to bring to this area of the city, and the central location (downtown) would be of greater benefit to more people, and would place it in a more visible location.

Agree Airhero! Everybody, call your city council person and tell them to go ahead and DESIGNATE THE STATE STREET RDA AREA! They have all the data, federal, state garbage done, THEY JUST NEED TO SIGN THE DAMNED THING! Same thing for the 9 Line. We, as citizens, need to be more active and hold our city accountable. It is this very lethargy that causes the state to do terrible things like commandeer entire quadrants of our city. In Ogden if you have a great idea for a property, they will carve out, draw and designate an RDA area in 60 days! These areas have been under study for YEARS!

CONGRATS TO QUARTERS ARCADE BAR!

Went to the soft opening last night and the place is awesome! Only downside is I came home and my wife was awakened by all the quarters I had in my back pocket. No more sneaking around for me. Once that block is done this year, with Quarters, Nice & Easy cocktail bar and Takashi's Japanese cocktail bar and at least two more F&B concepts in the horn, that block is as badass as any single block in the west. As an aside, although I can be oft-times brutal and hard on our city staff and leadership (see above), the SLC EDLF Loan Program is probably the most progressive thing happening in any city I know of for ground-level local retail. Dozens of bars, restaurants and other retail have been seeded by it, including mine. It is really a gem that we can hang our hats on. I travel, eat and drink for a living and I am still yet to find an equivalent in other cities. Hats off to SLC Economic Development for that.

That is cool news. Is this also due to easing up on that restriction of only 2 bars per block or something like that?

That definitely has something to do with it. They actually changed that regulation 10 years ago but it does help. I also think it's just a sign that we have a pretty mature bar scene. Very exciting times indeed!

The $1.3 trillion spending bill Congress unveiled last night offered renewed hope for transit advocates, who feared the steep cuts initially put forth in the president’s budget proposal.

The bill, which covers spending through the end of September, includes significant increases in transit funding. The Community Development Block Grant program, which many local governments have used to fund streetscaping, cycling, and pedestrian-friendly projects, would receive a significant boost, rising to $3.3 billion from the $3 billion allocated in 2017. Initially, President Trump’s budget called for eliminating the program.

In addition, the bill includes more money for Capital Investment Grants, which help pay for transit projects, increasing spending from $2.4 to $2.6 billion, and would allocate $1.5 billion for the TIGER Grant program, tripling the $500 million spent on the program in 2017. This Obama-era program has been a key tool used by state and local governments to fund new rail and transit expansions.

Wow, that Tiger Grant bump is incredible news. If I remember correctly that made FrontLines 2015 and the S-Line both possible.

New Starts was used for FrontLines. Tiger helped with the S-Line. I think UVX (Orem/Provo BRT) was New Starts as well but I could be mistaken.

UTA hasn't been as fortunate as other areas for Tiger grants because of the limited funding for the grant program. This increase should help increase the number of projects that are able to receive funding. I would hope that Salt Lake and UTA submit a request again for double tracking and extending the S-Line to the Monument Plaza.

Here's a cut & paste from a FB discussion about the number of units left for sale in the Regent at City Creek. It is from the lead sales agent at City Creek Living: "...only about 8 units left in Regent...Should be exciting news announced later this spring about things to come in the neighborhood..stay tuned!"

Probably a casino. Or a gentleman’s club. Or free bagel Friday for all residents. All equally likely.

From Isaac's most recent post: "While encouraging zoning that would create more new construction, the panel also suggested that the city look at ways to encourage adaptive reuses of some of the neighborhoods older buildings as a way to reactivate the neighborhood while preserving its historic character."

I think this mindset is absolutely critical in a lot of ways. I recently went to dinner with a friend who works for skyline realty in New York City. His boss actually lives in Holladay, UT but flies out to NYC every week for work.

They have basically been focusing on gentrifying Harlem for the last 5 or so years by buying out old apartment tenants, who are on rent-control, in the area and then remodeling the building and selling for more.. It's worked out incredibly well for them.

I asked if he or his boss would ever consider building here in Utah and he said that he never would because of the cost. I assumed NYC would cost more but since they aren't building from the ground up, they are only doing remodeling, the cost is a lot cheaper. I had never understood why our developers here often give us less than appealing large apartment buildings (Stucco, horrible designs and color schemes) compared to brick, steel and glass. I guess the cost of building from the ground up, compared to a remodel is a big reason why.
