Personally I prefer when the skyscraper is right smack in the thick of it. Like the Empire State Building.

The extreme thinness of the building has me doubting about its financial merits.
Once again more of the worst urban planning from Dubai. I'm still trying to figure out how one accesses the plaza to get to the tower from the roundabout circling it. There's no entrance anywhere I can see. If you're meant to walk the mile long wind swept plaza to get to it where do you disembark? This whole thing seems like an ill thought out waste of resources and energy. I agree it won't be financially viable unless of course it is intended to be more of an observation tower a la CN Tower.

Edit: what are the levitating orbs with the crowds gathered around them? This looks more like a movie concept for X-Men Apocalypse than a legitimate building design.

^^exactly. i don't mind the plaza from an aesthetic point of view... but what nobody seems to realize is that its HALF A KILOMETER WIDE!!!!! Imagine a field of open concrete the width of central park... nobody is gonna wanna go out there.. i imagine they'll end up building a walkway or something underneath.

When I saw this in Skyscraper Construction, I thought "Is this really gonna be built?". I'm somewhat alright with the wires, if they are structurally vital, although they do add a weird visual mark on Dubai, which is already filled with outlandish projects. The shap looks arihgt, although I don't see how living in a hotel all the way up there would be very fun How fast would the Evelator have to be? How well culd they get plumbing/wiring all the way up there? Just wondering, since this is wild.

The Tower at Dubai Creek to be 100m higher than Burj Khalifa

Quote:
The new tower being built at Dubai Creek Harbour by Emaar Properties will be 100 metres taller than Burj Khalifa, according to Mohamed Alabbar, the Emaar Properties chairman.

Mr Alabbar has said that work will start on the project to build the tower next month, according to CNN. Designed by the Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava, the new cable-tied tower is planned as the centrepiece to a major new district based on the banks of Dubai’s creek close to the wildlife sanctuary at Ras Al Khor.

Dubai Planning its Next Tallest Tower

Quote:
Dubai has always had a great affinity for tall structures, with skyscrapers popping up all over the city throughout its peak developmental years. The newest planned addition to the Dubai skyline will be no different, set to stand at 928 metres, 100 metres taller than the current tallest building in the world.

928m = 3044.62 which is 3,045 ft when rounded. Sig figs!

Calatrava... Better be ok with massive costs overruns. Also, what's this gonna cost every year to maintain?

Dubai Kicks Off Construction of World’s Tallest Building

Quote:
Construction on what will be the world’s tallest building by 2020 has officially started in Dubai, home to Burj Khalifa, currently world’s tallest man-made structure.

Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, laid the foundation stone on Oct. 10 for the Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour, according to a statement by the Dubai government’s media office.

“Years ago, we launched Burj Khalifa, the tallest skyscraper in the world," Sheikh Mohammed said in the statement. "Today, we are celebrating the foundation of a new structure that represents another phase in our journey to be at the forefront of growth in various sectors."

Precisely! The weather is always so extremely hotter during Summer. It will be so miserable weather in Dubai.

This thing sure looks ugly. If the middle eastern oil powers want to build their super-tall trophy skyscrapers they might as well make them look aesthetically pleasing. Like the Burj Khalifa's height was completely unnecessary but at least it wasn't just some stick rising out of the desert.
