It would seem that 111's gonna block the new Tappan "Not Mario Cuomo" Zee Bridge.

(I just prefer calling it by its proper designation. I'm as apolitical as they come.)

Mario Cuomo was one of the most venerated governors of NY. Further, the old bridge’s actual name was not the Tappan Zee. It was the Gov. Malcolm Wilson Bridge, and he was quite a racist.

Also, bridges are uniformly renamed by the government at its will. Consider the Robert Kennedy Triborough Bridge or the Ed Koch Queensborough Bridge.

Lastly, the former bridge, which was once known as the Tappan Zee, is being razed. The Cuomo Bridge is a completely different structure.

^^^^^^^^^^^

The exciting part is that we also have 80 South, which will be slightly taller and in terms of aspect-ratio, will have a similar effect downtown. So Midtown, and I hope eventually, downtown, will have two trophy towers that excel in aspect ratio.

I’m not holding my breath for 80 South St. I think that the current owner will sell the lot, and it won’t be developed until the current condo supply eases.

Currently at floor 60 and 778 feet. Believe it or not, 4 floors above this point is where the second setback shows up.

I remember thinking the buildings looked so tall in that movie. It's crazy that there are buildings almost 3 times the height of the ones in that shot going up right now.

If you want a blast from the past, check out the skyline mass in "New Jack City".

This is the intro: The city looked provincial back then. So much has risen. Jersey City back than was still a small farm town, full of banished New Yorkers.

Also, check out the skyline here. A nice peak also at C.Park South. Fortunately, this hasn't happened yet... so we are okay, but if it does, may the beam strike a Kaufman tower. DoBro was still in its infancy.

Pardon my french, but this scene is f**** great.

Tapering Begins As 111 West 57th Street Reaches For 1,428-Foot Pinnacle

Quote:
Construction on the most slender skyscraper in the world has been advancing at lightning speed, and now, YIMBY can confirm that 111 West 57th Street has reached another major milestone. Our last update, just over a month ago, missed an obscured but significant achievement. With additional progress since, we can see that the Midtown project has officially passed its first setback, on the 45th floor. This is the first of twelve setbacks that will end with the steel truss cap, which will ultimately define the striking silhouette of 57th Street’s second-tallest supertall.

SHoP Architects is responsible for designing the tower. The engineering masterpiece is covered on the northern and southern facades with a transparent curtain-wall glass, with the west and east facades decorated by bronze and terracotta cladding. The terracotta is shaped deliberately to interact with the sun and create a sweeping play of shadow and light. This interaction with the sun is already starting to be evident.

Façade installation is about a dozen floors beneath the setback. A massive 800-ton tuned mass damper will crown the project, designed to minimize movement and vibrations. It will be the heaviest in the world, surpassing Taipei 101’s 730-ton tuned mass damper.

111 West 57th Street’s damper will have the equivalent weight of just over three and a half Statues of Liberty.

[...]

The structure will reach supertall heights between the third and fourth setbacks. An estimated completion date has not been announced, but can likely be expected during 2020. JDS optimistically expects occupancy as early as 2019.

As a bay area native, I would thank God for having this beauty rise here. But I get what you mean with the sarcasm

This has probably been asked before... but how are those terracotta tiles fixed to the side of the building? Anyone on here know?

They look loose and brittle... like slate roof tiles.. its a beautiful look

Looks like its clamped to the sheared concrete walls. They are applying the terracotta in a vertical column fashion. So vertically (height) of one column over the width of the structure until its cladded, and repeat as each floor gains the cladding.
