ONNI also owns the office buildings on the former Lougheed Drive-In site next door.

Kinda ironic that the office building built ages ago has so much parking (three lots) is now right next door to a sky train station. And will be next door to a large TOD.

But back then it was needed. I could see those parking areas being redeveloped.

From the general transit thread:

Alright, to the point:

It looks like the plan has changed again for Metrotown Station. Instead of a loop at the base of the station, it sounds like the city wants the main bus bays to be located on either side of Central Boulevard, with the current loop area still being used for some buses, Handy Dart, and layovers. Central Boulevard would continue to have two GP through lanes in each direction.

Good news is that a replacement passerelle is planned to connect to the new central (mid) station house.

Also of interest:
- addition of 4 escalators each, to the east and west station houses (8 total).
- bike storage room
- 3 retail units at grade
- current bus loop reverses direction (becomes counter-clockwise)
- current bus loop island used as layover area, with adjacent escalators closed

The rest seems to be roughly the same as previous designs.

Here's the link to the report: https://burnaby.civicweb.net/Documen....aspx?ID=14912

I don't know how much the station architecture will change, but I hope it looks similar to what was posted previously on this forum (I think it was a VIA Architecture design). Considering the relatively limited budget for the project, I thought the design was quite nice - simple, modern, respectful of the previous design.

Okay, hope this is at all useful to anyone.

The city is always against moving the bus loop to under the station, saying it doesn't fit its vision around the Beresford St. area.
The new design requires passengers to move between the bus exchange and the station at grade level across the street. This might further slow down traffic flow. It wouldn't be a good experience for passengers in rainy winter. I have a feeling traffic warden might be required at the crosswalk to manage passenger/car traffic conflict and jaywalk issue.

Main Street's Concourse and part of the old platform floor is now long gone.

Part of me wants the old station sign. I guess I can email TransLink and see if they will let go of it for scrap or something. It would look nice over the garage door.

Also what the heck is up with the panels? There's a whole bunch of them that are not lined up and it's even more obvious on the platform.

Thanks for the pics.

Maybe the panels will all be adjusted when the rest are installed
(may depend on alignment of the remaining sections?)

From the platform you can clearly see the vertical panel supports are welded and can't be moved. I really wish I got a photo of that but photos were not allowed on the platform.

Wait, who said that photos were not allowed on the platform?

I don't think TransLink has any sweeping ban or restriction regarding photos on the system...

They've never liked people with monopods or tripods on the platforms (even a vacant station like VCC/clark where it was just a microphone on a stand). I submitted a filming request to TransLink a few months ago and apparently there's a moratorium on all recording on TransLink property until the renovations are complete (something about potential security issues). I'll respect them for that but once the renos are done I'm submitting again.

Are they not replacing the elevator shaft? That thing is super tiny.

It looks like the elevator has been removed from that shaft. They have a new, bigger glass elevator installed in the eastern station house. Maybe they'll put one on the west side as well. But if Broadway is any indication, probably not.

They had a batch of Transit Police posters a year or two ago where it depicted someone photographing inside a station and below it to report any suspicious activities. Just because I own something better than a point-and-shoot It isn't uncommon someone asks what I am doing but hey, someone's got to document the nitty gritty. There was one off incident where I was setup taking time lapses outside the OMC and about twenty minutes later I had to explain what I was doing to the RCMP. I can understand a bit of security but come on.

The DPB report for the Broadway-Commercial renovations includes drawings of
a potential future expansion for a new platform on the west side of the station
in addition to the currently proposed east side platform

(in which case the rest of the Expo-era truss would be removed).

One option has another new passarelle over Broadway.
The other option does not and transferring passengers would have to walk around to the other passarelles or cross at grade).

Reminder of the currently proposed east side platform:

The wide new platform is on the right with the column trees.
Presumably, the column trees and the truss on the west side of the new roof will support the Expo station truss
(which currently relies on the Safeway wall for support)

Am I taking crazy pills? Why do they call that a west platform when it is clearly on the east side of the station??

Well, if you go far enough west, you eventually land east.
