Surely New York is worth a smoother design? That looks like a bit of a jumble.

Oh right, but 500 meters? In times square? That would be a trip

Sometimes renderings don't do a building justice.

I can't count how many renderings of past projects have made the building look less awesome than the real thing. Some of the more detailed renderings did make it look really nice though, especially that one of the top/spire.

I have it listed as 300m+, since we don't know any specifics. It's a project by Barnett at Times Square.

New York is lucky then. It's rare for a building to do the renders justice this side of the border.

^ Yep, they were posted in the TV thread some days ago. Man, this building is going to be crazy, I love it. I'm switching back and forth between Steinway and Verre. Both are utterly amazing skyscrapers!
Pity Verre got a height cut, whereas Steinway will be very visible on the skyline.

Steinway will be unreal. I always use 432 Park as a reference to how it will impact the skyline. From the right angles, 432 with elevation boost is just dominating. Which begs the question on the type of impact Nordstrom will have.

Well, with the spire ~ 1,900' EL which is crazy.

Alright, Google says 79' 11'' EL for 217W57th Street.
So we got 1610' (491m) EL roof and 1875' (572m) EL spire.

Nordstrom will have a massive impact on the skyline!

Barnett claims it will still be 1775' though and the latest rendering makes it look like the ~1480' version. I'm not 100% sure but that would be my guess.

That still puts it at ~1560 roof and ~1885 spire though.

Yeah and it's really just nitpicking at this point. At least its over 1500 feet. An extra couple of feet, eh, but breaking the 1500' barrier in NA, is a milestone. Slowly but surely roof height is increasing and in frequency too.

What I've been interested statistics wise is an exact number of high rises in the city and what the summation of all of them will be once complete (ones in demo/u/c :: /approved. I know Emporis is outdated, but the CTBUH is probably the closest thing accuracy wise but the problem is that both sources aren't precise and accurate at the same time. I need precise and accurate!

I'm wondering if city hall has records on the subject.

I did a little exercise last month out of curiosity on the subject and came up with 6792 high rises and skyscrapers. This being for the city limits. Adding up the Gold Coast, plus Yonkers, gives us 7280 highrises/skyscrapers. Now this is not adding up the eastern proxies in Long Island, so I know I am missing a lot. Didn't even add up Newark either or the Oranges.

But just a half-ass projection, I'd say the total count of highrises for this region will be 7663 AFTER all the current projects are complete (ones u/c or in advanced stages of demo). This being half-ass because there are many structures as defined by the definition of high rises that have permits for construction, and are in the process of being active that haven't been included. Also missing some crucial high rise nodes. Problem is a lot of high rises going up aren't known, and that's what I try to expose via my compilation threads.

Another problem I have is the exact definition of a high rise which can greatly inflate numbers. These values being for structures 12 floors and/or 100 ft or greater. Some places though claim 10 floors is a highrise and anywhere from 60-90 feet is a high rise.

Probably something I'll work on down the line.

True but we still don't know for sure it'll be over 1500'. So far we've heard 1479, 1490, 1493, 1515 and 1530' but at the end of the day they are all pretty similar so it doesn't really matter. I'm looking forward to it in any case

And yea it is nice about the gradual height increase of NA buildings, whoever thought a 1000+ footer would be built in SF or Philly? Never would have imagined. Although on the other hand by today's standards that's certainly not what it used to be.

Your work is much appreciated Chris! With all those NYC compilation threads SSP will become the prime source for New York highrise/skyscraper/supertall projects. I have a feeling it already is ...

The change in the skyline: 1996 vs 2015

I posted a comparison in the transformation thread comparing the view from the WTC original to now. We can also see just how much the city has grown since with respect to Midtown and everything North of Canal Street.

Size of the original is big, but it helps to spot the changes.

Comparison: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...1&postcount=64

Now we just have to see that same perspective 5 years from now, and see the change from 1996 to 2015 to 2020.

ONE thing to notice are the changes West of MSG. Its almost unreal how many towers where added

What I would do is for Windows 7 and above, if your screen has a high resolution, make a separate window and clip it to the left and the new one on the right. Makes viewing the changes easier.
