USA Feb 2010 - Denver

The Mile High City, from that fucking massive airport in the middle of nowhere to Cherry Creek - a nice little surprise. Pretty much envisaged just as a beer stop on the trip - the downtown through up a few surprises, some very cool bars and nooks and crannies, but it's just lacking people and street activity - excluding the 16th street Mall.

Let me tell you, the place had no streetlife because of the weather. I was there last week, it was sunny and 60, and there were oodles of people out!

I think it is one of USA:s liveliest cities, but I understand it was cold when taking the pics. Cool photos anyway!

Wasn't it cold in Chicago too? Denver, outside of 16th does feel a bit "underpedestrianized" I love me some Denver though.

Denver has an average high throughout winter of 45 degrees F.

It is only colder at night and if a strong storm is coming through!

I used to live in Denver and would love how it would be 65 degrees and sunny in mid Jan!!

I live downtown, looks like you were here on a Sunday.

Check it out between April-October and it'll be quite different, I bet ya.

Weird. Bad luck for you, then.

You gotta check out Colfax next time you're here, if you haven't already.

Denver has come a long way in the last 20 years. Yes, it has it's days and more so in the warmer months. You're absolutely right though tayser, as far as Denver has come in the last two decades, it has just as far to go over the next decade. It's still very much so, a work in progress. Keep in mind when comparing to Chicago, these things; Chicago has ~3 million people in it's city limits, Denver has ~600,000 people. Chicago has ~13 million in it's greater metro area, Denver has ~2.8 million people in its greater metro area. Chicago has a well established and fairly extensive mass transit system, Denver has some nice light rail but is still working on building most of its system out (including its downtown Union Station multi-model hub).

For a US city its size, Denver is doing well and definitely going in the right direction. The next decade will likely see reconstruction of most major downtown streets to make them more pedestrian friendly; the addition of several thousand more downtown residential units and a few tens of thousands of residential units in neighborhoods surrounding downtown; a couple thousand more downtown hotel rooms (there are already a huge number of those now); redevelopment of Denver Union Station & construction of FasTracks metro mass transit system (which will eventually increase daily passengers at Union Station to 200,000 people) and several million square feet of mix use buildings that come with it; Redevelopment of Civic Center Park and construction of a streetcar line from Civic Center Station down Colfax to Aurora; implementation of a 16th Street Mall type of free circulator bus from Union Station running down 18th & 19th Streets to Civic Center Station; and the list goes on...

huge, huge plans for downtown Denver over the next 10 years. I love your shots, it looks like you got a nice taste of Denver ;-) In 2014, you will be able to ride a nice, fast electric train (EMU) from Denver International Airport to downtown, making for a comfortable and far more convenient trip... Do go back!
