Rent and Drive Your Own Electronic Vehicle: Kaohsiung City has Commissioned a Company to Implement E-Car Sharing in the City

In response to global warming and other environmental issues such as air pollution, and to minimize the number of private vehicles, the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City will be the first to launch K-ecar sharing in Taiwan, taking another step toward the vision of a smart, low-carbon city. Diànchíh Company has been commissioned to implement K-ecar sharing, and a contract has been signed. Diànchíh will jointly run the K-ecar sharing service with some major car manufacturers in Taiwan. Rental stations are currently planned for major state administrative centers, tourist sites, MRT stations, shopping areas, etc.

According to the Transportation Bureau, in conjunction with the Ecomobility Festival, Diànchíh will provide on-site demonstration of the K-ecar sharing service in the Hamasen area this October, and the service may be launched within a year at the earliest. The Bureau plans to set up 50 stations in the future and provide at least 84 vehicles designated for one-way car rental.

By launching the K-ecar sharing service, the Bureau aims to lower the number of privately-owned vehicles, joining the global trend of sharing economy while improving the issues of traffic congestion, parking, and air pollution in Kaohsiung. Once the service is launched, people can use cars without having to first purchase and own a vehicle of their own. As soon as they sign up for membership, which will be verified by an electronic system, they can start using the service. Fare is calculated based on time, and the mode of rental is one-way by default, in order to minimize parking issues. This way, residents will be able to save the money they spend on cars, including the vehicle itself and related taxes, and the goal of improving the city’s transportation and environment will also have been met.

E-car sharing has been well-established and developed in Europe and America for several years now. No city in Taiwan has been able to implement E-car sharing thus far, and Kaohsiung will be the first. To familiarize residents with the service, including the rental method and the performance of the cars, the Transportation Bureau plans to set up a demonstration-and-trial station at the Ecomobility Festival this October. Residents will then be able to gain a first-hand understanding of the new public transportation service.

Director-General of the Transportation Bureau Chen Ching-Fu said that in the past few years, the City Government has worked hard to introduce various green public transportation systems, such as KMRT, the Light Rail, double-decker buses, and shared taxi service, in order to improve the quality of transportation and residential life in the city. The addition of the K-ecar sharing service will improve and complete Kaohsiung’s public transportation network and provide transportation service to people’s homes. Now that a company has been commissioned, which was a major milestone, we hope to provide more diverse options of green transportation for the public and eventually become a city of ecomobility.
