Also, the design has been altered. It seems clear it will remain the VAG, and only the building will be named after the Chans.

One big change to the building design announced by the architect during today’s press conference is the enclosure of the building with a unique skin system of glass, covering the wooden exterior and providing more opportunities for museum visitors to look outside.

Great to see the Chans stand up yet again for art & culture but its a shame the donor pool is so weak in a city with so much money to buy overpriced houses.

Edited to add: the design changes definitely help the look of the building, though I'm still not a fan of the form.

The article notes that the *building* will be named the Chan Centre for Visual Arts* while the Vancouver Art Gallery name remains unchanged. That's normal for philanthropically-named arts and cultural buildings. The Arts Club Theatre Company accepted a naming rights donation from Industrial Alliance for the Stanley Theatre, resulting in the venue being named the Industrial Alliance Stage, or something to that effect, and it certainly hasn't resulted in any confusion among its patrons.

They need to up the grandeur quotient - build an open plaza (the width of the base) at the entrance.
That'll help reconcile the awkward slope of the street.

The glass-clad facade looks better than the wood (more modern) - but they need to add some colour.
Coloured fritt would work well.
Hopefully it doesn't end up being boxes of spandrel glass.

The ticket office looks like a food truck window (with fold-down shutter).

More pics at the VAG website.

View when (if?) the Media Club Building at the QE Theatre (soon to be Browns) is demolished.
BTW - likely unintentional, but the effect of the retail podium is to "wall-off" the art gallery and the plaza.
Not good optics for an institution trying to shed an elitist image.

Despite the ugly escalator there is a funky staircase hidden between two cores:

Grand staircase reminiscent of the Hotel Vancouver or the old Court House:

The plaza walls even look barren during an event.
Presumably the blank wall on the cores will be clad with sculptures in the future.

Not sure I'd want another plaza, given the dead zone created by the QE Theatre's next door. Restaurant/retail created more street life.

And why are they still showing the QE parkade/Browns as being demolished? Brown's looks to be doing quite a bit of work there, I doubt they'd be happy to see it flushed anytime soon. Plus, despite whatever fantasyland planners might live in, that parkade is full when the theatre is in use.

Looks more like a transformer skull to me.

I really mean just a wider entrance to the interior courtyard plaza.
- so if you look down the block you can tell - hey there's the entrance!
At the Court House VAG, you have to walk around 2 sides to find where the entrance is (south side or Hornby side).

If nothing else, it's definitely a step up from the old "IKEA brutalist" design; the new exterior walls emphasize the silhouette instead of the body or material.

Oh my god. They want to build a glass art gallery in the city of glass. What's even worse, the rendering suggests the glazing will be the same as the surrounding buildings. This building looks tacky as fuck.

The large wall around the plaza is not good. Frankly they should get rid of the "plaza" and just turn it into interior space. There is a huge plaza across the street. It's all a bit brutalitic. Almost like it belongs on a university campus from the 70s

All I can see is a transformer head. It is a step in the right direction from the original. I would be curious to see what the other options that were submitted from the other bids

I agree that it would have been cool to see the other proposals. I think it may have even been cool to have the citizens of this city vote for the one they liked the most. We may have even gotten a cooler designed form factor had we had a say in the final selection but I guess perhaps the powers that be thought the people of this city have bad taste.

Well, they're not wrong. That said, TPTB evidently have even worse taste...

That's definitely not the main entrance, the proposal included a plaza at the front.

I agree the design is actually decent now. Not great, but ok. At least it might be weather-proof.

I didn't even notice that.

The redevelopment of the Stadium lands could help compensate.

The renderings still show the Vancouver Art Gallery name, perhaps they'll have dual names like many museum buildings around the world. Perhaps the entire complex will bear the VAG name while the main building will be the Chan Centre.

Perhaps. All we know so far is that only the physical building will bear a new name, not the institution itself.

...the land around BC Place that is going to be redeveloped. There's only ONE stadium in this general area.
