Could be purposeful - a handful of the industrial buildings in St. John's were raised by Jewish immigrants from Central/Eastern Europe. This particular one, though, as far as I know, was founded as the Newfoundland branch of an English clothing company.

Agreed completely. Even its neighbouring buildings look like they were taken from a Soviet-bloc city.

In the end it will be very, very colourful and patterened. It's like putting an ancient Greek statue back to its original colours.

A lot of very gaudy faux finishes and the like were very popular when the building was built, and it's these that are being restored - its original condition.

So a lot of this more recent artwork will be removed:







And it'll be returned to what's underneath:







Some rooms, though, were relatively tasteful even by contemporary standards. This one, for example, is almost entirely (excluding the floor) back to how it looked in the mid-1800s:

A very positive one. From Memorial's census of every building in the city, completed between 1983 and 1987.

Looks like they are nearly done with installing the facade back, you can see the replicated pieces and the old with the colour change.

I have some questions regarding the procedure in the case of the destruction of a historic building through an act of god(fire, earthquake, storm, etc.) in the city of Toronto.

I was looking through the Ontario Heritage Act and there doesn't seem to be anything with regards to these events, so what does happen in the event of a fire for example? Do the owners need to rebuild the structure in these events, does the owner get a free pass to redevelop, is it a case by case negotiation between the building owner and the city?

A $130M restoration of the North Park Armoury in Halifax is about to start. It will take 7 years to complete. This project is interesting because the building is a landmark of national significance and it's not in great shape; for years there have been covered wooden walkways around the building to protect pedestrians from falling masonry.

It was built in 1898. It has a steel frame and at the time was the largest open or column-free indoor space in Canada.
