Barclays Center developer says show will go on
Despite the recent demise of the company fabricating the weathered-steel skin for the new home of Brooklyn Nets basketball team, the opening is still set for later this year.

The developer of the Barclays Center arena in downtown Brooklyn says that the year-end demise of the company that is fabricating the weathered steel for the arena's distinctive façade will not result in any construction delays.

The 675,000-square-foot arena that will be home to the Brooklyn Nets is supposed to open this fall in time for the start of the basketball season. It is the first building to rise in the vast $4.9 billion, 14-apartment tower Atlantic Yards project being developed by Forest City Ratner Cos.

“We are concerned when any of our partners has problems, but we don't believe it will affect our construction schedule,” said MaryAnne Gilmartin, executive vice president of Forest City Ratner, referring to steel fabricator ASI Limited having gone out of business. “We can still continue with construction.”

In a statement, a spokesman for Forest City said the site's construction manager, Hunt, and the bonding company for ASI have developed an action plan. They have already started work on site and have developed several options for on-going fabrication. It didn't specify the options.

That's reassuring considering how steady the pace of construction has been . . . I mean could the really afford to not keep proceeding . . .

Barclays Center steel back in the bag
After shutting its doors last month, the company making the weathered steel panels
that will sheath Brooklyn's Barclays Center again fires up the production line.

By Theresa Agovino
January 10, 2012

Quote:

Indiana-based ASI Limited reopened after the arena's contractor, Hunt Construction Group, worked with insurer Ohio Farmers to get the plant working again.

“We are very pleased with how Hunt responded to this situation,” said the Forest City spokesman. “Thanks to their aggressive actions, work has resumed, and we're all the more confident that we will meet our milestones for the arena.”

He added that Hunt is looking for additional companies to make the steel for the 675,000-square-foot arena that will be home to the Brooklyn Nets. Slated to open this fall, in time for the start of the basketball season, the arena is the first building to rise in the vast $4.9 billion, 14-apartment-tower Atlantic Yards project.

So I guess it's only open temporarily and after the arena's complete it's closed again.

Steel workers celebrated the topping out of the Barclays Center steel framing. The event marked the significant milestone of the completion of the 10,400 tons of structural steel for Barclays Center. To thank the approximately 500 steel workers who worked on the building, the Nets gave out 1,000 tickets to future weekend games.

Barclays Center Gets Its Roof

By: NY1 News

The roof is on, and the Barclays Center is one step closer to being finished.

The future home of the Brooklyn Nets was “topped” on Thursday.

The arena at Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues will not only house the NBA's Nets, but will also host other sporting events and an array of concerts and performances.

It is scheduled to open this September with a performance by Brooklyn's own Jay-Z.

Report: Islanders in talks to play a preseason game in Brooklyn

Jan 12, 2012
Staff report

Quote:
The New York Islanders are in talks to host a preseason game next season in Brooklyn at the yet-to-be-finished, future home of the New Jersey Nets, the Barclays Center, according to WFAN (660 AM) New York.

The Islanders lease at Nassau Coliseum ends at the end of the 2014-15 season. There has been no movement between the team and Nassau County on a new or refurbished arena, especially since a failed Aug. 1 referendum vote that shot down a bid for a new arena on Long Island.

Former Nets owner and Atlantic Yards developer Bruce Ratner has shown an interest in the Islanders moving to Brooklyn when their lease is up. In an appearance on Bloomberg Television's "The Property Players," Ratner said regarding the Islanders possible calling Brooklyn home in 2015, "I would hope that's possible. I certainly think there's a chance."

The Barclays Center will hold 18,000 for basketball and for hockey it could only fit 14,500 spectators. The smallest NHL building is currently the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, which holds 15,004 spectators.

^NHL rink is 200'x85', NBA court is 94'x50'.
Plus NHL must put in bulky barriers and much larger team sideline areas due to equipment.

I like how it's modern, yet at the same time values the Brooklyn brick architectural tradition, if you want to call it that. Not that it uses actual bricks in construction, but the brown cladding is awesome.

Testing the Ice Where Hockey Was an Afterthought

By LIZ ROBBINS
January 31, 2012

Quote:
Seventy years ago, a struggling professional hockey team, desperate for fans, victories and a new arena, adopted Brooklyn as its temporary home for one year. Now, another New York team, desperate for the very same things, will go to Brooklyn for one night. The New York Islanders, tied for last place in their conference and playing in the obsolete Nassau Coliseum, are scheduled to play an exhibition game against the New Jersey Devils in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Oct. 2, perhaps to test the ice for a future move.

The arena that had been designed, and redesigned, for basketball will now transform somewhat awkwardly to accommodate hockey for its first sporting event days after the building opens with a concert by Jay-Z. The Nets will start playing there in mid-October.

While the Nets will be assessing the new building, so, too, perhaps will the Islanders. The hockey team’s owner, Charles Wang, has for several years been pushing for significant upgrades to the 40-year-old Coliseum or for a new building when the Islanders’ lease expires, in 2015. Last summer, voters in Nassau County soundly rejected plans for a new arena and practice center, and Mr. Wang is said to be weighing other options.

“We would love for Charles to consider Brooklyn,” said Brett Yormark, the chief executive of Nets Basketball. He said the Nets had not inquired about ownership of the Islanders or any other National Hockey League franchise.

The Barclays Center, under the original design of Frank Gehry, was configured to accommodate professional hockey. But when Mr. Gehry was replaced by SHoP Architects and the company now known as Aecom, hockey became an afterthought. Now, the developer of the arena and the surrounding Atlantic Yards site, Forest City Ratner Companies, is adjusting to make the arena suitable for hockey. According to Robert Sanna, Forest City Ratner’s executive vice president for construction and design development, the seating capacity will be reduced to 14,500 from 18,000 for basketball, which would make it the league’s smallest rink. Retractable seats will mostly be collapsed on one end, closest to the Atlantic Terminal side, and therefore the alignment around the rink will resemble a horseshoe.

A Tour Of The Atlantic Yards Arena

By Daniel Geiger 2/01

The Seating Bowl
Developer Bruce Ratner stands at the main entrance to the seating bowl within Barclays Center. Since breaking ground in late 2010, the 18,000-seat arena, which is scheduled to be open and running by September, is fast approaching completion. Behind Mr. Ratner, large yellow supports still brace the arena’s ceiling, which is almost fully roofed. A cherry picker works overhead, lifting workers so that they can finish bolting the large spans of structural steel together.

The Main Entrance to Barclays Center
Though littered now with construction materials and various debris, this will be the grand entrance to Barclays Center, leading in and out to a plaza space at the corner Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues, across the street from the transit hub Atlantic Terminal.

Upper and Lower Deck Seating
A close up of the upper and lower deck of seats that will ring the arena floor. Mr. Ratner was excited about a key design feature of Barclays Center that places its basketball court below grade so that patrons will be split between heading up or down to their seats in the arena, depending on where they are sitting. “We broke up the flow of traffic,” Mr. Ratner said, explaining that it would limit congestion and make navigating the arena less confusing.

The Ceiling
A close up of the large temporary supports bracing the ceiling. Only the sunlit patch is not yet covered over. It soon will be. Forest City Ratner estimates the roof will be done in February.

The Facade
Barclays Center is clad in a wrap of steel that snakes around the arena and connects into an hanging occulus that will cantilever over the building’s front entrance. The individual panels of the steel vary in size creating a feeling of undulating movement in the facade.

The Hoist
A hoist for workers building upper portions of the arena.

The Front Plaza
The front plaza, which borders Atlantic and Flatbush avenues where they converge, will create a new public amenity for the neighborhood Mr. Ratner said. Games within the arena can partially be seen from the front and a practice court for players will be fully visible from this entrance area, allowing even non ticket holding passersby to view the action inside. The large facade panel in the foreground was, moments after this photo was taken, lifted by the crane and placed on the arena.

Close up of the Facade Steel
The A36 steel that is being used to sheath portions of the arena was purposely selected for the way it rusts (its rust doesn’t rub off like normal rust does if touched). “We like to work with natural materials,” said Christopher Sharples, one of the arena’s chief designers and a principal at the firm SHoP Architects. He said that the rich patina of the steel would deepen as it continues to age.

Scaling Down
The facade steel wraps the arena like two ribbons as seen in this photo. Mr. Shraples said this was done to scale down the arena.

The Temporary Rail Yard
The rest of the Atlantic Yards. Forest City Ratner constructed a temporary rail yard on the right while it works to build a permanent facility on the left. Eventually the whole recessed portion of the yards will be decked over so that development can proceed above.

The Eastern Portion of the Site
Work on the permanent portion of the yard is beginning from the east side of the site in the distance.

Subway Entrance
As part of the arena project, Forest City Ratner is rebuilding and vastly expanding the subway entrance and corridors in front of the arena that connect to the Nos. 2 and 3 trains.

Subway Station
A look at the large below ground station that Forest City Ratner is building, a major improvement over the previous station.
