Buffalo, New York - Lower West Side

The Lower Wast Side consists of the neighborhoods immediately northwest of downtown, bounded by Lake Erie and the Niagara River to the west, and adjacent to the Upper West Side, West Village, and Allentown neighborhoods to the north and east. The area has been inhabited since the early 1800s, and most of it was part of the original Buffalo city limits when incorporated in 1832. Niagara Street is the major local thoroughfare, and the area includes the American side access and customs for the Peace Bridge to Canada.

Very nice! There's something about Buffalo that I like, can't quite put my finger on it (besides, the cool name). Thanks for sharing.

Great to see other areas of Buffalo, different from the usual downtown, Elmwood, Allentown, University. Some wonderful old buildings/housing there. Thanks.

edit: Ooops, I just saw that you've posted a bunch of Buffalo neighborhood threads. Guess I'll be busy for a while now.

Front Park, with Statue of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, overlooking Lake Erie at the source of the Niagara River. Perry led the defeat of the British in the Battle of Lake Erie, War of 1812.

It is the Connecticut Street Armory, and was built in 1899 of native Medina sandstone. Inside, the drill hall was one of the largest truss-spanned, clear-space interiors in the world at the time of construction, and the building includes carved-oak staircases, doors, and moldings. It is one of the largest armories in the country, and still used for that purpose today.

Nice pictures!

What is the border between the Lower West Side and the Upper West Side? Porter Avenue?

It depends. What constitutes the "West Side" or "Lower West Side" seems to be redefined periodically as the neighborhood changes. Several city planning maps show Porter and North as a dividing line. Google Maps shows LWS further north. Some people refer only to the area just behind city hall. Some people refer to the entire part of town west of Elmwood as West Side. I just think of LWS as basically the areas south of the Peace Bridge.

Porter Avenue was the dividing line between Buffalo and Black Rock before the two merged in 1853, so that's as good a line as any.

Looking west down Porter Avenue:

Recently I've been listening to CAS's K. so this thread reminds me of "down the lower east side..."

My Aunt Doris lived on the second floor. My cousin Karen lived in the top floor after my Aunt died.

I was just in Buffalo last month and spent a morning checking out Allendale, Elmwood, DT and Hertel Ave. Loved the character of the neighborhoods--great homes, lively commercial nodes plus nice parks and parkways! Thanks for the tour!
