I wish they'd keep the design of the existing building, but just make it 55 floors. The rush to modernize every building is going to strip the city of architectural diversity. It's reckless to destroy buildings simply because they don't match the tastes of the day.

The Yorkville cluster might rank as the 5th best in Canada in a few years. 4 towers over 200m and about 20+ towers between 100m-200m.

Interesting development. If accepted, Toronto may be seeing some world class architecture by way of a casino.

http://www.globaltoronto.com/olg+cha...700/story.html

"A gaming and entertainment facility in downtown Toronto would create 6,000 construction jobs over three years, 12,000 "well-paying" jobs once completed and lead to billions of dollars in capital investment, Godfrey said. It would be the largest development project anywhere in Canada.

World-class gaming operators say they're prepared to spend up to $3 billion in capital costs in downtown Toronto, he added."
...
"Less than 10 per cent of the square footage would be used for table games and slots. The rest would include hospitality, entertainment, retail and convention space."

Toronto Star office parking lot set to succumb to city’s condo craze

The Toronto Star parking lot is about to become the latest piece of land to succumb to the city’s condominium craze, according to multiple sources.

A deal is expected to close in the coming days that would see Vancouver-based Pinnacle International Realty Group develop the project which is expected to include up to three towers. The existing office tower at One Yonge St., home to the Toronto Star which has a long-term lease for its space, will not be impacted by the development.

“The actual Toronto Star building will not be touched,” said a source close to the deal, who did not want his name used. The newspaper has options which could extend its lease another 20 years.

“I’m sure it will be something iconic,” said a source. “They are planning multiple towers. It will be a major Yonge Street address with great water views.”The revitalization of the waterfront near Yonge has made the area ripe for development, said the source. “Investors are looking for more triple A projects than just run-of-the-mill projects. It makes sense to locate close to transit, close to the subway.”

One industry developer said the land could be worth as much as $70 to $75 per buildable square foot in today’s real estate market. “It’s a big lot, so we are talking very big numbers,” said the developer.

^Thanks for that.

Is it just my ignorance, or is 88 Scott moving surprisingly slowly? 50% in three months, and I have seen full-page ads for it several times in the Star. It's a well-designed building, imo, in a nice part of downtown.

Is anyone else concerned that all Toronto seems to build are condos? ... I live here, and it seemed exciting to hear all the construction at first, but it's gotten to the point where it seems more scary and excessive at this point.

Condo's typically can't be used for anytihng else except... living space. In the future the buildings would have to be ripped down to be useful for anything else. (maybe a hotel, but we have a lot of those too) .

I would expect that with a boom in local population to be a boom in various types of public / commerical / industrial as well? where is the other architecture?

Isn't there something like 4 million sq. ft. of office space under way? With a couple million more set to begin in the near future with BA 2 and possibly a new tower at Richmond-Adelaide centre.

Oh!. well that could be. I'm glad to hear that though. I imagine a lot of it is a matter of time too.. There has to be a population here first probably before the demand for other things will catch up.

Most of the condo's going up are fairly nice though so i'm not complaining, but it seems relentless. I'm wondering too about over saturation and if that will happen or not..

Yes, I think prep work has begun on the 44-storey B-A 2, but I could be jumping the gun.

Well according to these guys we should see it break ground before the years end
http://www.stockhouse.com/news/canad...aspx?n=8625619

Bay Adelaide East, located on Adelaide Street West between Bay and Yonge Streets, adjacent to the existing Bay Adelaide West, will be a 44-storey, 980,000-square-foot office tower with best-in-class operational, environmental and life safety systems. The company plans to break ground before the end of the year with completion expected in late 2015

Professional services firm Deloitte signed a lease commitment earlier this year to occupy 420,000 square feet, or 43 percent of the building, as Bay Adelaide East's anchor tenant. Once completed, the East and West towers will represent the forefront of premier office product in Toronto's financial core, encompassing the full Adelaide Street block between Bay and Yonge Streets

Also it looks like this one will be moving forward, though a bit shorter
and we should expect new renderings soon.

Harbour Plaza Residences (66 storey/233m-765 ft. + 62 storey/224m-735 ft.) and 1 York Street office bldg.(37s/174m-570 ft.)

City of Toronto final report.......

This application proposes one office building and two residential towers with a common podium

and 62 storeys (233 and 224 metres respectively including mechanical penthouse) each with a
combined total of approximately 1,305 dwelling units. There are three storeys of commercial
retail proposed in the base of the podium. The proposal integrates the elevated PATH pedestrian
bridge spanning from 85 Harbour Street to the
Air Canada Centre (40 Bay Street) along the
easterly perimeter of the building on the second
floor.
This report reviews and recommends approval
in principle of the Official Plan Amendment
and Zoning By-law Amendment subject to the
provision of parking in accordance with the
requirements as set out in this report.

Well there is a lot going on in the film industry
here is one.....Pinewood Toronto Studios to announce $40 million expansion

In another sign that the city’s film and television production industry is on the rise, Pinewood Toronto Studios is set to break ground on three new sound stages.

Details are set to be announced Thursday for the $40 million expansion at the 4.5-hectare Port Lands site, which already boasts the largest sound stage in North America. The project will see the construction of three 10,800-square foot sound stages and an additional 100,000 square feet of office space.

Toronto’s film and television industry passed the $1 billion mark in total spending last year, thanks in large part to Pinewood, which played host to two massive blockbuster films: the remake of Total Recall starring Colin Farrell and Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro’s latest project, a sci-fi monster epic entitled Pacific Rim, set for release in July 2013.

The Toronto condo boom is truly unprecedented. It's really starting to put a huge shadow over what Miami thought was a condo boom, haha. I do smell something not right...this can't last forever, but it has been a long cycle. I wonder when the best part of the cycle was and if it's now already too late to join the fray? All good things must come to an end (I predict some of these buildings that are 50-75% sold will open mostly unsold).
