What's more, 80 South, when that starts rising, won't block anything in that view...maybe except that new shard tower by ESB. The other downtowners in the pipeline are gonna look great, too.
And the Big Three rising around CP will be visible (*maybe* Nordstrom might have a hard time peeking). As will 1V.

This is so sad, but it's not complete yet! So hopefully when 2WTC comes it will finally look and feel complete.

All I see hear in your sorrowful poem is nostalgia and crying over nothing... The new complex is far nicer than the old windswept plaza and grey monolithic towers of the old. It still has its powerful appearance.

I understand it's disappointing that the spires atop this tower are no longer... but this is still the greatest city in the USA (by a long shot) and it firmly stands shoulder to shoulder with Tokyo, London and Paris... and beats them at their game in many categories.

If you've been in NYC lately, you'd see the city is literally covered with tower cranes. It already has remarkable landmark towers and will soon add another half-dozen to its ranks.

By the way, the WTC is very practical. NYC is a practical, hard-working, surprisingly sustainable city that produces output. It isn't a long-term practical joke waiting to disappoint everyone by building uselessly tall towers in the desert. This is a city that gets stuff done.... with.... or without a few spires on one random building.

Yes, I'm sorry Value Engineering exists, but it keeps NYC competitive and it keeps it REAL. NYC has a future because it's unfortunately practical.

I mean...Who amongst us wouldn't like to see NYC have a skyline that makes Coruscant look like a shanty block?

The Downtown skyline is already better than it was pre 9/11, and it's only getting better! Downtown as a whole has had so many improvements since then, and that's also showing on the skyline. This tower will just be the 3rd most prominent in the WTC comples alone.

Agreed. The former WTC were amazing but so massive that they were out of place with the rest of Downtown while the new buildings blend in and compliment the rest of the LM skyline.

NYC is practical and the top city in the US, but it could be a little more adventurous in design. However, as the HdM architect noted in a recent article, it is hard to build anything too "out of the box" in NYC due to the massive amounts of restrictions they have to deal with. Either that, or the folks with the power and money in NYC are conservative in their tastes. Buildings like the Gherkin, the Shanghai Tower and the Beijing TV HQ are some of the examples of futuristic designs that NYC could embrace. Also, loosen up on those restrictions NYC to allow for more adventurous designs just as the architect himself noted.

I think you're referring to Dubai perhaps (those useless towers in a desert) and other cities in the Gulf that are exploding. It is hardly a joke city despite its follies. The location of Dubai is a guaranteed winner for its future - between the exploding East and established West. Transportation linkages and tourism will keep it relevant alone. So don't be too quick to look down on what they are doing. NYC was once the city engaged in a race to build the tallest towers that many in Europe considered childish/ridiculous. How times have changed.

Certainly there will have to come a point in the City's development--and for all I know is entirely possible now given the (inevitably) necessary amendments to current zoning regs--wherein the freedom to build in any form permissible by current engineering standards can, within a prefectly square parcel of porperty, be the norm.

If NY's bragging to be the premier alpha city in the world is to truly hold water, IMO more cutting-edge international architectural styles and tends will have to be accepted. And even further down the road, hybridizations of those styles can evolve...sort of an architectural extrapolation from the multicultural melting pot concept.

This whole complex, in a "prefect world" such as mine and (dare I assume) yours, would have met those standards and then some. This tremendous city is blessed with the pull to attract architects of great distinction and creative ability who can work with the antiquated, redundant constraints foisted on them and pull some kwazy wabbits out of their hats.

2¢ plus tax.
