In the first picture above, the round building on Wacker...what is that? Hopefully it goes away soon...such a waste of space.

The Seventeenth Church of Christ Scientist. Its a house of worship for those who follow Christian Science. The building is pretty visually impressive, but the religion is a total misnomer.

Woah hold on there compadre. That's a Harry Weese designed architectural gem.

eh. I'm sure what could be built in its place would be much more impressive, at least from the outside. Awesome photo though, Vista's huge.

Just stop already!

I wonder if the blow through floors could be used as an amenity floor or observation space!

Why not relocate the congregation of The Seventeenth Church of Christ Scientist up there to free up the space on Wacker for an ultra tall?!

Not really... it's a cramped location with horrible street access for anything tall. Would be a traffic nightmare. I'd much rather keep the architectural gem. There's history in them walls.

As for the picture updates, last few have been fantastic. Keep it up guys!

Well considering it is an f-ing awesome building that should never be torn down, NO. Also, don't be fooled, that's not just concrete on the exterior, most of that is travertine limestone panels. You don't knock stuff like that down.

Seriously, the interior is incredible. If the congregation ever leaves it would make an awesome music venue or theater. Not every lot needs a supertall on it. This would be a shitty spot for one for so many reasons. It's already a tight space, but when you consider the fact that you have 71 E Wacker with 36 floors of glass windows right next to it, you are going to have an abysmally tiny footprint for a tall building. 71 E Wacker is also a beautiful landmark MCM tower that was completed in 1960 and should also never be desecrated. this whole triangle of real estate is pretty much "done" at this point save for the Sterling Bay parcel on the back corner along Michigan. If they are going to put a supertall on this block it should be on the giant square quarter block site fronting Michigan Ave. It's going to soar over everything else on the block anyhow.

We have too much architectural heritage crammed into too small of a space and it's high time we stop trashing our existing gems when we have hundreds of acres of brownfield space left to develop downtown.

If they ever leave, put on the phantom of the opera there.

As a place of worship it can be exempted from landmarking. So really the congregation needs to initiate this themselves if it's ever going to be done.

And since they already presumably don't pay property taxes, there's really no incentive for them to want it landmarked is there, other than perhaps to just be able to say it is? It's a decent-sized auditorium, somewhere around 750 seats, so the Church is unlikely to outgrow it anytime soon since it's a fairly minority sect, but it's also not so enormous or archaic like some European cathedral that upkeep costs will drive them out. It's likely to stay a church for a long time. Trivia I didn't know - according to Wikipedia, "The church's interior amphitheater was the set for the Choosing Ceremony scene in the 2014 film Divergent."
