CHICAGO | Albany Park & Humboldt Park

Let's check out some commercial strips on Chicago's vast Northwest Side.

First up: Albany Park, one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the city. It is a predominantly foreign-born community, with significant populations of Mexican, Filipino, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Korean, Guatemalan, Cambodian, and Middle Eastern folks. This stretch of Lawrence Avenue is known as Chicago's Koreatown. Although most Korean residents have moved further north in the city and into the suburbs, many Korean stores remain. The neighborhood's largest population is Mexican. It is a very busy area with excellent dining options. Despite being relatively near the outskirts of the city and well inland from the lake, Albany Park has a population density near 30,000 sq/mi. The side streets of Albany Park are mostly unbroken stretches of brick 2-flats and 3-flats, but with more frame housing appearing in the western end of the neighborhood.

We're starting at the 2nd-to-last station on the Brown Line, and heading west on Lawrence.

Heading south on Pulaski Rd

Old police station

Now on Montrose, heading east

Humboldt Park is a neighborhood on Chicago's near NW side. It lies just west of the popular Wicker Park neighborhood, and just south of Logan Square. Humboldt Park is largely Mexican and Puerto Rican, with a significant African American minority.

The part of the neighborhood I'm touring is located in the western half of the West Town community area.

North Ave at Kedzie. We'll be heading east on North.

North & California

This recent building is good infill. This is the type of density we should be building on our major streets.

Thanks for the tour and what I found interesting is how these Chicago neighborhoods resemble many in northeastern New Jersey.

"no really, the new bay window will totally mesh seamlessly with the original structure. no one will ever know."

it's sad how this group of buildings has been so savagely raped over the decades.

great pics of some great hoods, nice job once again!

^ Driving on North Ave through Humboldt Park, I can think of about 4-5 new infill buildings like this that have gone up in recent years.

I believe all of them have been built by non-for-profit organizations focused on providing affordable housing for Latinos who are at risk of being priced out of the neighborhood. It's really nice to see.

On a side note, of you keep driving west on North Ave you'll run into an interesting construction site--a church that is essentially a glass box being built on stilts, with parking below, is currently under way. Damn I wish I could find a rendering of the finished product!

Excellent tour.
So many beautiful buildings covered in makeshift renovations & hideous signs.

Another great tour would be Milwaukee Avenue.

I agree. Lawrence Ave always reminds me of Bergenline Ave in West New York, or Main Street in Hackensack. North Ave west of Kedzie kind of reminds me of East Market St in Paterson.
