Northern lights expected to light up southern B.C. skies
The Northern Lights are making a rare appearance overhead this week, thanks to a solar “burp” that occurred Sunday and has spewed particles into Earth’s atmosphere.
The display is expected to be at its best Wednesday and Thursday nights.
“It’s something unique for Victorians. But for the rest of Canada, it’s actually quite common,” said Eric Chisholm, an engineering physicist at the Herzberg Institute for Astrophysics in Saanich.
As particles ejected by the sun interact with gases in Earth’s atmosphere, “this produces a beautiful symphony of lights — it actually is magical,” said Chisholm.
