As is the case with the rest of the NHL coaches (except Lindy Ruff). In this day and age it seems like coaches just can't keep a hold on their team. Daryl Sutter's track record is actually pretty good. He had quite a few good seasons with the Sharks..albeit regular seasons, and was let go after one bad season. He lead Calgary to the two best seasons they've had in the last 17 years and left on his own. How long would the team have played well under him? Hard to say.
It's hard to say with Brent. He had two good seasons with the Devils and then left. He didn't make the playoffs in Calgary, but I don't really think it's the fault of the message being lost on the players, but more of a case of the team just not being good enough.
