Ground broken Friday for the $20 million, eight-story hotel.
For Scott Enterprises, the waiting came to an end early Friday afternoon as the family-owned company broke ground for a $20 million, eight-story hotel, the first installment of a planned $160 million mixed-used Harbor Place development.
More than 100 guests, including political figures, community and business leaders, gathered under a tent or shivered outside on an unusually cool day on 12 acres west of Blasco Library. Among those on hand was Dennis Davin, Pennsylvania Secretary for Community and Economic Development.
Nick Scott Jr., a vice president of the company, described Friday as coming full circle for a family whose American journey began with the 1916 arrival of his grandfather, Christ Skountzos, in the United States.
His grandfather, who shortened his last name to Scott, would eventually find his way to Erie where he would build a number of motels. His third project, Scott said, would be the Niagara Hotel, at the site of the present-day 100 State St., not far from the location of the new Hampton Inn & Suites for which the company broke ground Friday.

His father, Nick Scott Sr., said this hotel is the first of as many as 10 construction phases that will eventually include restaurants, housing, retail and office space. The second phase, he said, will be a 90,000-square-foot mixed-use office building.
The elder Scott, president of Scott Enterprises, said Friday that he already has a tenant lined up for the building. He committed to moving Scott Enterprises headquarters from Summit Township to the new building on Erie’s bayfront.
Nick Scott Sr. said he’s encouraged by the development that he sees all around him, including the work of the Erie Downtown Development Corp. and projects by Erie Insurance and UPMC Hamot.
