All big cities have a kind of glow to them at night, but I always liked how the fog/marine layer in SF reflects the light of the city, and exaggerates that glow:

The cityscape of Moscow, in 1908: I never realized heavy city traffic could consist of horse-drawn sleds!

The Shanghai intro scene in the new Bond movie Skyfall is pretty badass, the music and the visuals.

What If the Entire World Lived in 1 City?

Read More: http://www.theatlanticcities.com/des...d-1-city/4897/

Quote:
.....

Hsiang and Mendis have increasingly come to believe that the only way to study and plan for our urban planet is to conceptualize its entire population in one seamless landscape – to picture 7 billion of us as if we all lived in a single, massive city.

- This is the premise behind an ambitious research project, called "The City of 7 Billion,” for which the two recently won the $100,000 Latrobe Prize from the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows. With the geo-spatial model Mendis and Hsiang are creating – think a super-enhanced, zoomable Google Earth, Hsiang says – they’re hoping to study the impact of population growth and resource consumption at the scale of the whole world.

.....

This animation captures how they then visually illustrated this population density data in a 25-year time sequence, from 1990 to 2015, across dozens of cities. Each little white column represents the population living on a parcel of land 25-by-25 kilometers in size.

Hsiang and Mendis then turned that spatial visualization into a physical installation at the 2011 Chengdu Biennale in China. They modeled the population distribution of the entire world in a kind of inverted map that visitors could walk into, inside a 10-by-10-by-10 foot room, with North America on the ceiling, Asia on one wall, Africa on another.

The 10 year celebration theme for Roppongi Hills is "LOVE TOKYO." We will be starting a movement here from Roppongi Hills to transform Tokyo into a more attractive and exciting "world-class city." We are opening a 10th anniversary website in which users can experience 3D projection mapping on a miniature model of the city of Tokyo at a 1:1000 scale.

Roppongi Hills hits 10th anniversary
April 26, 2013
Jiji Press

Quote:
Roppongi Hills celebrated its 10th anniversary Thursday, with its reputation as one of the busiest trendy facilities in Japan showing no sign of fading.

The complex, with the 54-story "Mori Tower" commercial complex at its center, still attracts over 40 million visitors annually and continues to be an icon of modern Japan.

The stylish Roppongi landmark gave birth to the buzzword "Hills-zoku," which refers to executives working in the tower and residents of the luxury apartment buildings on the premises.

Roppongi Hills was born out of a 17-year project by property developer Mori Building Co. to redevelop an old and overcrowded 12-hectare section of Roppongi in Minato Ward, Tokyo. At a cost of 270 billion yen, it represented the highest investment by a private company in an urban redevelopment project.

The Economic/Social Importance of Placemaking

I posted this in the Canada section but it didn't generate any interesting conversations - so I thought I would try it here.

We recently hosted an American expert, Doctor Katherine Loflin. She was brought here by Happy City St. John's, our foremost citizen engagement organization.

I think her presentation is brilliant - and she the little tidbits she drops are fascinating. For example, if you increase social activity, you see same-year increases in citizens' attachment to their community. It's one of the most responsive things they measure.

So, please, have a look at this presentation, and let me know what you think of her points!
