Are they at least building this out of stone rather than precast concrete?

Because that's the only thing I could see redeeming this building (somewhat).

Well, we certainly know the Farwell building portion will be the original facade.

This doesn't look or feel like 21st century modern luxury or pre-war luxury, this just looks cheap - passe, a building designed by and for undiscerning tastes.
Its the Boul Mich version of the cul-de-sac; we are lucky it is not beige vinyl clad; though we did get the garage door.....Yea!

I love the design. It sits somewhere between modern and gothic/industrial. It should be a great fit for Chicago.

We can sit here for the next 2 years and argue about our subjective opinions regarding the aesthetics of this building. Or, we could document the construction of this building and provide critical information regarding construction data, thereby empowering all of us on this website. I can appreciate the wit and banter that's mixed into this conversation. However, I would appreciate that we conduct a fair and accurate analysis of this building's construction.

Hmm, first one sounds much more entertaining. Let's go with that.

Btw, about the empowerment mentioned in the second option. Just what would all the documentation and critical information give us the empowerment to actually do? It's cool to have a knack for using catchy PR lingo to get others psyched about doing what you you want. But it would be nicer for the one-liners to have at least a little substance.

If clad in stone, it might not be half bad. Though we'll probably get stuck with pre-cast or painted concrete.

^^^ Well now that I see the details this could turn out to be an average or OK building. Thats if they keep the details. I actually really like the rounded balconies, too bad it doesn't jive with the classicist base. If they manage to make the crown half-decent looking it could even be an "alright" building". If its clad in stone I would even consider calling it "good"...

However the odds of any of those happening let alone all of them is very slim. It will likely turn out a tacky POS.

my best guess is that this will follow the elysian; stone at the base, precast upstairs. i'd really be shocked if they stooped to painted concrete given the prestige of both the ritz-carlton brand and the prominent mag mile address, though in this economy, i guess no amount of VEing is ever really off the table, unfortunately.

Well the original building goes from Classical to Art Deco styles. The extension goes from Art Deco to International Style. So really this is quite a clever and contextual design. Perhaps, the best Lagrange yet. Since it is an evolution and extension of the existing building it also expresses it's evolution of styles in its design. I like it.
