III Damascus. In and around the Umayyad Mosque.

Oké, we continue our tour and visit one of the nicest mosques in the moslimworld.

The Grand Mosque of Damascus', also known as the Ummayad Mosque is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world. Located in one of the holiest sites in the old city of Damascus, it is of great architectural importance.

The mosque holds a shrine which is said to contain the head of John the Baptist (Yahya), honored as a prophet by Muslims and Christians alike. The head was supposedly found during the excavations for the building of the mosque. The mosque also holds an important Shi'ite shrine, containing the head of Hussein, grandchild of the Prophet. This shrine is located at the far (eastern) end of the courtyard from the main entrance, and is visited by many Shi'ite pilgrims, especially from Iraq. The tomb of Saladin stands in a small garden adjoining the north wall of the mosque.

In 2001 Pope John Paul II visited the mosque, primarily to visit the relics of John the Baptist. It was the first time a pope paid a visit to a mosque[1].

Beautiful. It's a shame the US refuses to improve relations with Syria. Of course then Damascus might become another Dubai.

Maybe if the Syrians stopped interfering in Lebanese politics, and stopped assassinating Lebanese politicians, the U.S. (and France, and other Western countries) would "improve relations" with them. But I guess the U.S. is always to blame for everything, right?

And the suggestion that Damascus could become another Dubai is laughable.

I don't allways agree with the US-policy in the Middle East.
But the Syrian gouvernment realy sucks.
I've read a lot of books and articles about Syria last months and talked with several people in the country.
President Bashar al-Assad is one of the worst dictators in the region and the regime of his Baat' Party is highly corrupt...
Syria is not a country, it's an open air political prison where thousands of dissidents were killed the last decades.
It' wrong of Israel to occupy the Syrian Golan Heights, but even when they should give it back to Syria like they're planned, it wouldn't change anything on the internal affairs of the country.

It's a strange way of celebrating Eastern. I took the picture in the Christian part of Damascus at Eastern Holidays.

In Damascus we've rented a nice flat at the seventh and highest floor of an old apartmentbuilding near the centre.
From our balcony we had some wonderful views.

1. At the horizon you can see the Old Town.

3. Somewhere on the right you'll notice the presidential palace on top of a hill.
The snowy mountains are a part of the Anti-Lebanonmountains.

6. De holly Quasiounmountain where Kaïn should have killed his brother Abel.
From there the views over town are stunning!
