The stadium is going to be a landmark. If it was the old Marshmallow, I would like this development the way it is. But if the province is spending close to 600 million to upgrade the roof to something iconic, why is it being hidden by developments? Basically, what I've come up with is what I feel would be a better way to expose and show off the new stadium design without outright eliminating the development, from a layman's outside point of view:

Numbered from the right/east of those pics to the left, there are 7 towers I'm concerned about. 1 & 2 are the eastern most and shortest towers, 1 being the more northeastern of the two and tower 2 being the more southeastern tower. Tower 3 would be the shorter tower southeast of the two towers with the "bridge" which are towers 4 & 5. Tower 6 would be the tower between the "bridge" towers and Coopers point, closest to the stadium, and tower 7 would be the southern tower on the same podium, closest to the water and beside the "point" of Coopers Point.

Effectively, what I think would be better is if all of towers 2-5 would be redesigned into low-midrise developments, with the roofs being no higher than the compression ring on the stadium.

Further, tower 6 would be shortened significantly enough to help expose the Stadium roof even further when viewed from the Olympic Village. Not as low as 2-5, but maybe two thirds it's current height or the same level as the casino development roof height, whichever is lower.

Then, take the excess density from shortening all the towers, and make tower 1 & 7 as tall as possible without causing shadowing issues or interfering with viewcones (would even a minor intrusion be possible with an "Iconic" enough design?). And then, if there is any remaining density from the original proposal, could the developer transfer to other sites?

Like I said, this is just the layman's opinion. I'm hoping for critics and possible criticisms from those who make this their profession about my ideas, whether they are good, bad, or right out to lunch.

Wow, they've completely blocked off the false creek view of the stadium (the most photogenic angle). Just terrible.

The stadium is ugly as sin in my opinion, I'm happy to see it blocked. My view will look directly across false creek towards it, so I'm doubly glad to see something go up in front of it.

Those are just massings though, I'm sure by the time something happens there the buildings will look quite different.

Why in the world would they block views of the stadium? I think it's going to look fantastic. The mid-rise idea is much better.

I think those were just a rough concept for the NEFC long term development plan. The skybridge building just represents a standout piece of architecture and there are no actual plans for it.

As to why they're planning for all those buildings, it's about money. PAVCO owns land around BC Place, and money for the stadium renovation will come from building on those sites as well as the casino lease.

All I would ask is that the public spaces get constructed first, and then let all the different developers proceed whenever they are ready.

Growing up, and from my grandparents house in the Niagara region, I could see the Skydome in Toronto from across Lake Ontario clear as day back in the early-mid 1990s. Today, it's barely visible at all.

Same idea, the waterfront got developed, highrises were built in front of it.

The NEFC massing renders were discussed a couple of months ago - I think someone mentioned that the bridge building is a "placeholder" for a landmark building and does not represent what will be built (although it seems like pretty poor discretion in selecting that form to present).

Metro-One will be glad to know that they have the video board that faces the Cambie St bridge up and running again.

+1. Like they used to say in high school: nice from afar, but far from nice. It looks OK when you see a little model, but the reality is quite different.

Some people, myself included, like the look of the new roof already. Of course that is always subject to change, but why aim to hide something that isn't even completed?

I think it will look good when it's done, too.

Certainly replacing a giant marshmallow doesn't leave much to compare it to, style-wise, though.

I'm liking it already, but I also think it will look a lot better once it's finished (imagine that..). It's really top-heavy right now, but once the glass or whatever goes up to the level of the compression beams, the proportions of the masts sitting on top of the bowl structure should look a lot more balanced.

I think the stadium's looking great right now. Can't wait to see it when it's fully completed with all of it's lighting features. It's going to be an upgrade from the marshmellow roof that we got before.

EDIT: Looking at BC Place in the background of that first picture, it appears that the lower portion of BC Place is getting a facelift too. Were we aware of that new stadium entrance?
I love it. And the glass facade on the stadium really reminds me of the New Wembley.
