Wow! heavy equipment already going. Something tells me this project will move along quickly now that it's underway.
(nice fall by the way, and good recovery. Never even stopped filming, that's what I call dedication!)

Thanks guys, I'm still feeling it with that fall I had. LOL

Anyways here are some pics of the Stadium Site.

A Real sign now stands on state street right by the Jordan Commons.

Someone should e-mail these pics to Brad Swedlund and show him that his gay petition failed.

LOL,

Looking at the video and the pics, I get the impression that this project is not going to be wasting any time. I would be very happy if Checkett's proves the naysayer's wrong. I think he will, and in a big way.

I assume that the latest rendering that we have all seen is THE final rendering and that is what we will see? I sure hope so, cause the stadium looks SWEET in that rendering..

Sandy takes steps to give funds to Real

SANDY — The Sandy City Council on Tuesday night authorized the first steps of an agreement to give Real Salt Lake $10 million for site improvements at the soccer stadium.
Staff will now move forward with preparing a draft Community Development Project Area plan. That community-development area, an arm of the Redevelopment Agency, lets the city help fund infrastructure costs for items like curbs and sewer lines around the stadium.
In addition, the City Council, which doubles as the RDA board, discussed an interlocal agreement and development agreement revolving around the Sandy stadium. That interlocal agreement between Sandy, Sandy RDA and the Governor's Office of Economic Development outlines the state's terms to give Real $35 million in hotel-room taxes.
A public hearing will be held May 8 with the City Council to discuss the interlocal agreement.

Real seeking a say in S.L. sports complex

By Doug Smeath
Deseret Morning News
As Salt Lake City prepares to go forward with a sports complex that Real Salt Lake has agreed to help fund, the soccer team's owner wants to make sure he retains some control over the plans.
The 180-acre complex at about 2000 North between Redwood Road and Interstate 215 is largely being funded by a $15.3 million bond approved by city voters in 2003, with the understanding that another $7.5 million would come from private donations.
That money was found in the form of an agreement with the Major League Soccer team and was part of the public-private partnership approved by the Legislature in February that will build a Real stadium in Sandy.
Now, team owner Dave Checketts has sent Mayor Rocky Anderson a letter reiterating his desire to play a part in some of the park's decisions.
"As with any investment, we want to make sure we clearly understand all the details of how the money will be used, how the complex will be managed and how our partnership will work," Checketts wrote.
Among the elements he listed as wanting to forge an agreement on are the project's scope, a viable business plan, location and naming rights. Checketts also said he hopes one day the team will be able to practice at the complex.
"We are in continual discussions with Real Salt Lake," the city's community-development director, Rick Graham, told the City Council on Tuesday. "We are covering a lot of different issues, and we will continue to have those discussions and fully expect at the end of the day we have a very positive opportunity to make this work."
Among Real's concerns is that the scope of the project appears "to have been reduced from what we had originally anticipated." Graham said Tuesday that the number of soccer fields planned at the site had to be reduced.
The first phase of the complex would include 16 natural-turf soccer fields, two baseball diamonds, two softball diamonds, three "comfort stations" to include restrooms and concessions and more than 2,000 parking spaces. The plan will also include the expansion of the Jordan River Parkway Trail in the area.
The city hopes to add a $19 million second phase sometime in the future, adding eight synthetic-turf soccer fields, two more baseball diamonds, two more softball diamonds and possible championship stadiums for baseball, softball and soccer.
The city anticipates rugby and lacrosse could also be played at the site, and the hope is that it will be a regional draw, as well as a way to relieve pressure on the city's existing parks.
Not everyone, however, is cheering the plan. Jeff Salt, head of the Great Salt Lakekeeper watchdog group, has long opposed the complex, saying that it does not belong along the banks of the Jordan River.
Salt on Tuesday called the plan "outlandish" and said it would line the river with parking lots and ruin the natural environment. He said said his group may take its complaints to court.
Once the plan is ready to move forward, the city will start collecting increased property taxes to pay for the bonds. In 2003, it was estimated the tax would be an additional $7.75 yearly on a $175,000 home. Businesses would carry a heavier burden.

The last thing I heard on the news was that swedlund's numbers were getting counted. But since we never heard a follow up story I'm guessing they failed.

Thumbs down GO AWAY Real Salt Lake WE DON'T WANT YOU.

The majority of Salt Lakers out there polled by newspapers do not agree with the decision to fund the stadium through the governments' legislative maneuvering. Talk about unchecked power. These bigwigs think they can finance a project like this with one vote, after all the debate and study and research, the money spent in working this, and the fact that the SL County major rejected it? The team can't get financing from private sector either. The reality is that a few bigwigs with a lot of money, and who've probably never even put a foot in a soccer stadium before, want this project to go through and are moving their influence solely to satisy their own bets and the power brokers they work with.

NO ONE WANTS THIS THING. And you're kidding yourself if you think it will be good for the city. And that is the reality. The safe bet would be to put this project in a demographic that really would support this eyesore of sprawl and asphalt, and that is westside SLC. We're talking largely hispanic neighborhoods and the only people who actually will show up consisently to these games, as illegal hispanic immigrants flooding the country doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon. But there is no way this project is going to the westside because places in SUV-suburbia like Sandy and Draper are where money is at. After all, the kids who go to private school in these areas, are much more likely to afford a ticket than Pablo in Rose Park.

If you're thinking that is a little extreme, than ask yourself, in SLC, where the major hospitals (U, SL, LDS, Cottonwood, etc.) are? Where are the major universities? The hubs of communities? They are all overwelmingly EAST of the Interstate, even though the majority of people and the trend in growing population, is to the West. How many hospitals do you know of out West?? How many Universities? This is a real problem.

But the power brokers on the hill could care less if soccer were the sport being played there anyway. They would move mountains to get greedy hands on the project even if the stadium housed championship badminton it meant they could get funds to build it! It's the whole Big-box scenario magnified 10 times. It's all about taxes and floating dollars. It's not about urban spaces and community identity.

These are the true dynamics of the soccer stadium. Period.

That's a great idea let's give up Real Salt Lake to another state that already has every major sport teams there is so that way all we will have are the Utah Jazz. In fact let's make this state even lamer and let's sell the Utah Jazz as well. Way not?...After all this is Utah the most boringest state in the U.S. ( So that's what people say ) It's funny people bitch and whine about how boring utah and salt lake city is and that we need more sports here, but yet when we get a new team people have to get all butt hurt about them and want them to leave.

Really this is getting old. People will do WHATEVER they can to find dirt on RSL. Get over it.

The GREAT cities of the world understand that it isn't about Quantity of projects, but QUALITY. If it's a bad deal, who cares if we lose it? We're better off in the long run.

Maybe you should think a bit more about what kind of cities we are building instead of thinking like a stupid developer with land to spare.

Duplicating posts is not allowed, futurist. Don't do it again.

You are more than welcome to disagree with the stadium and argue your point, but 1) keep it in this thread, and 2) don't let it devolve like the other one did. The repercussions will be different if I have to step in again.

"Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert announced this morning that Get Real Utah gathered only 12,343 of the 92,000 signatures needed statewide."

LoL, That's it?...They were not even close of getting those 92,000 signatures.

Sounds like "Get Real Utah" are the ones who really need to get real.

While I'm still no fan of the funding deal that is financing it, I think that critics of the project (myself included) should finally put this controversy to rest and get on with construction of the stadium.

And oh yeah.... Our referendum system is junk. The voucher referendum was the first one to be successful in over 30 years. That is a signal either that the system is broken, or that our legislators have been perfect for 33 years.
