There is a new place going in, although I already forgot the name of it. Hopefully it doesn't suck.
I live in Bridgeland, and the problem I found with the Artisan bistro is that it always seemed closed. I wondered how they planned on making a living, I guess we have an answer.

Excellent news. The Artisan Bistro location has been taken over by the people that own Dairy Lane. It will be the same sort of idea, Blue Star Diner. Yay!

That little section of Edmonton Trail is starting to turn into a bit of a destination.

Speaking of Edmonton Trail, on my way to work I was thinking this triangle of grass

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=calgar...178.09,,0,6.94

Would make a great 'welcome to Bridgeland/Riverside' flowerbed, and be the 'gate' for what hopefully is a future edmonton trail couplet BRZ

Speaking of Bridgeland, the City Bakery has also closed up shop.

It's a massive site for lease. Personally, would be thrilled to see the rooftop patio come into use as a bar. The other nice thing about this site is it's on the north side of the street and captures the sun nicely. Bridgeland is missing both a neighbourhood pub and a proper fitness facility.

I'll miss the bakery, but like polishavengers comments about Artisan Bistro, I found the hours inconvenient.

Not sure if this has been posted either:

Has anyone been to Chef Mario's gelato shop on Centre Ave yet?

It's actually on First Ave, across from Artisan Bistro/Blue Star Diner.

His pizza is frigging amazing. The cones and flowers are alright, but I'd go for a pizza if I was taking someone there. I had the desert cone with Nutella melted/baked on top of it and topped with gelato Tuesday. Delicious. I think it's one of the best amenities the whole neighbourhood has.

I was at the Prairie Regional Barista Competition at Fratello's roasting facility today. 150 people showed up- incredible. In 2008 I'd say the audience was maybe 30. Representing the Prairie region at nationals in Vancouver (nb "prairies" is competitors from AB. SK, MB and the NT but everybody at this one was from either Calgary or Edmonton) will be

1. Ben Put (Transcend, Edmonton)
2. Chris Tellez (Phil & Sebastian, Calgary)
3. Josh Hockin (Transcend)
4. Jeremy Ho (P&S).

Rounding out the top 6 (of 13 competitors, which is a lot for a regional btw) were Joel May from Fratello and a young woman from Cafe Haven in Sherwood Park.

So a great day for Transcend and P&S. Ben was until last year the head barista trainer at P&S and moved to Edmonton with his wife after she got accepted for grad school at the U of A, so I see this as the bigger winner for P&S but I'm a Calgary coffee booster. Ben came in second at nationals last year and I really think this is his to win now. He has won prairies 3 years in a row now.

ANYWAY, one problem with having the event at Fratello (which is near Century Casino, 4021 9 St SE) is that there is nothing to eat anywhere close. They solved this problem this year by having the ALLEYBURGER truck do its maiden voyage there today! So we got- after a two hour wait in a huge line that was mostly made up of people not attending the PRBC- to sample them. I wanted the original pork burger but they'd run out by the time we got to order (from Connie herself!) so sated my hunger with a large "whole truck" burger which is angus patties. I got a "regular" which had two patties and a small order of fries- fried in duck fat.

Oh my fucking God and Jesus Christ in fucking heaven. Hype met, hype exceeded. The fries- oh dear lord. Perfect, UNCTUOUS fries. The burger was just a thing of mesmerizing beauty with peri-peri aioli and I got mine with pickle too. The bun- how they get a bun so soft and almost melting like that?

Here it is:

I haven't seen any of the food trucks around yet? Have they launched?
I'm very excited - this is long overdue to Calgary. And considering the popularity of shows like Eat Street on food network (and their mobile food truck app for Iphones) - it will only get bigger!

HAPPY FOOD TRUCK DAY!!!!

Was having a facebook chat with one of the guys that runs the Perogy Boyz truck. He was saying that their permit will allow them to park at any metered parking spot with the exception of Stephen Ave. As for the equipment itself he says: "We have to meet very specific regs, potable water, waste, 3 compartment sinks etc. We are essentially a kitchen on wheels. We have 2 100pd propane bottles that will power our generator, run ur fridges, heat our water and our grills. We can also plug in to run everything. We have the best of both worlds"

Cool.

I was going to try to get an alley burger from their truck on Tuesday but didn't (they were still there but closing it down when I went past it looked like). Will have to hope I have a chance soon to try it.
