Cleveland: Summertime in the City by the Lake

I left my camera at home because I wanted to be mobile and not have to lug it around. All of these photos were taken with an iPhone so please excuse any images that may not be up to par.

I arrived to 90 degree weather as if I never left home. The city was in the full summertime swing. There were a lot of people out enjoying what the city has to offer.

Downtown and the Cuyahoga Valley in the distance

Looking east from the west side

I headed down to the west bank of the flats with family for dinner and cruise on the Nautica Queen. We walked along the boardwalk as we had some time to kill before boarding.

Onboard the Nautica Queen

As the cruise begins my niece asks what kind of bug was on the window. A very nice Clevelander seated at our table overhears the conversation and tells us that it is a Mayfly and gives us a Mayfly education. I will meet the Mayflies personally later down thread.

The skyline from the Nautica Queen

Our Captain

One can see how expansive the skyline actually is from this angle

The Beacon rising upward in the left center

The following day I make my way over Edgewater Park for a run to Wendy Park and back

The starting line

As I begin my run it is a very muggy 88 degrees. It is 9 degrees cooler back home albeit due to rain.

I make my way down the trail near Edgewater Beach

I arrive at Wendy Park 2.75 miles from park to park. Not the 10 mile distance I was told by someone at Edgewater but a nice run nonetheless.

I find my way down to the west bank of the Cuyahoga

The Nautica Queen and a large ship making their way from the lake into the river

The Port of Cleveland

The old Coast Guard station is looking much better these days

As I moved closer for this photo I was swarmed by a cloud of Mayflies

Peace dude

I make my way back to Edgewater

Back at Edgewater I check out the new beach house

Nearing the finish line

Run complete

The run was 5.53 miles round trip. No I’m not that slow! I stopped along the way to take these pictures

After my run I head downtown

The Waterfront Line

The Powerhouse, Jacobs Pavilion, and the Detroit-Superior Bridge

W 10th St hill to/from the east bank of the flats

Some good density expanding west into the Ohio city neighborhood from the flats

Enjoying the view on this beautiful Saturday afternoon

The Center St Swing Bridge

West Side Market in the distance

Sorry for the redundancy but I couldn’t choose just one

The night before this was the busiest spot in the flats. People were packed in like sardines.

The Warehouse District looking east

I head over to Public Square. This is the first time seeing the new design.

Beating the heat on this hot summer day

Can’t get there fast enough

Beacon construction progress

It was time for some water and some rest. Bye from Cleveland!

Fellow runner here. My favorite way to get acclimated to a new city is to strap on my Hokas and explore, even if it includes getting little lost (sometimes the best part). Really great photos and Cleveland looks hot (and hawt).

Nice pictures! Some of these are pretty good, despite the iPhone.

It always amazes me when people can take such great pics with their iPhone.

Cleveland is looking really good these days. I didn't know there was a beach so close to downtown.

Gotta love the Great Lakes cities in the summer!

I lived in Cleveland for about four months in the summer and fall of 1970. It never ceases to amaze me how the city has cleaned up and turned around. The only sad thing is that all the old downtown department stores are gone.

Cleveland looks really good these days

Strangely, on the other side of the lake, mayflies are called fishflies

They are also called fish flies ("Fish Flies Return To Southeastern Mich. Shorelines") in Michigan, too. Well, at least in Southeast Michigan. But I hear both.

There really is nothing quite like summer on the Great Lakes. I really enjoyed this shot on Public Square:

There were so many Mayflies coming ashore they showed up on the local radar.

Enjoyed the tour. Great to see Cleveland is continuing the comeback. Had a fun SSP meet-up there over a decade ago. Terminal Tower is one of my favorites. Thanks.

Excellent tour! Is there not another apartment building being built downtown as well as the Beacon?
