There's been significant work on all major highways...something 18 isn't.

I know that. Maybe they should just turn it into a gravel grid road again (along with 23, 5, etc). They would be a lot smoother.

That may very well happen. They'll maintain the surface as long as possible though, until the maintenance costs become too much, or it's due for some kind of upgrade.

So many of those highways in the far SW corner of the province have such trivial traffic counts it's actually a wonder that so many were paved in the first place. It wouldn't surprise me at all if some of them were simply downgraded back to gravel, or that in-between "thin membrane" state. Sask has already done a fair bit of that.

So just got back to Ottawa (god-damn that is a long time behind the wheel).

While I agree that the traffic counts in all the rural areas of Manitoba are quite low in terms of cars and light duty trucks, there is quite a bit of local traffic that consists of tandem axle and B train grain trucks, fuel trucks, livestock trucks and very large farm equipment using the highways to travel from field to field. All these vehicles are very very heavy and for highways that were designed and built in the 60's and 70's coupled with the closing of many elevators and rail lines have resulted in a pounding of these roads back into cart paths.
This summer Hi-line feeders are opening a regional feed mill in Killarney that is to supply feed to hog barns in SW MB and NE ND. That will just add to the heavy traffic on these roads.
I'm sure Brian Pallister's rural caucus is raising this issue in cabinet. I just wonder if there will be enough money to really do anything.

Highway 1 and 75 should have been freeways long ago.

^ I saw a tweet the other day of a construction pic (sorry, can't remember where but a twitter search should pull it up). It looked like it was coming along nicely and IIRC it was approaching the TCH.

Public notice for open houses and study for PTH 100 announced.

Link to Appendix C shows a very ambitious project including St. Norbert Bypass. Looks like 100/3 and 100/200 St. Mary’s construction to happen within 2-3 years.

Fingers crossed. Only concern was the potential for at grade intersections on St. N. Bypass.

Yeah I saw that. "if supported by acceptable traffic operations". That's pretty vague although I can't imagine a situation where it would be warranted to give any road access unless with a right in right out and long merges. If it's imperative that the road be accessible then I would just tunnel it under the bypass with no access. or some grade separation that keeps it from accessing the more important freeway.

I really hope this happens sooner than later because it would really alleviate traffic in St Norbert

The terminology used in the RFP document on Manitoba Infrastructure's page says expressway for the Bypass so there will likely be 1 or 2 at grade intersections. Given that St Norbert will eventually expand as residential or industrial towards Brady landfill there will likely need an access point.Freeway for Perimeter.

Great to hear about St Marys and Mcgillivray! The website also says the open housesin August will discuss the intermediate safety plan (closing medians)
