Looking at the sports' list, I am not sure much needs to be built. Student residences should be able to handle the ~6000 or so athletes. Need a mountain biking course that is about it.

More permanent facilities at Clarke Field would be nice. Commonwealth is already pretty much set to go.

But what bigger fish? Aside from World Cup or the Olympics, there isn't a bigger international sporting event. We are decades away from every being an olympics host city, so why not?

.... unless a $1B hypothetical security bill pops up and kills the bid......

Winter Olympics may be a worthy endeavour. Calgary hosted them, after all (note: I know being 3hrs from the mountains is a deterrent). But really, the Commonwealth Games are still a big event and would be a huge boost for Edmonton. The last time Canada hosted the games was in 1994, while Australia and the UK have hosted them twice since then. I think it's time for another games in Canada; perhaps it'll rejuvenate interest in it here.

Don't know. Maybe by North American media coverage because the US is involved, or lately because Toronto has to keep telling the country they are hosting it next year.

Ask Winnipeg, they hosted in 1999! Not much a splash or do I even remember caring.

The Pan Ams seem to be a bigger deal in South America, but I think by hosting it in a large North American city like Toronto, they're hoping to rekindle this market.

$800 million? I know inflation and all, but maybe if I were them I wouldn't count the velodrome as an additional expense, I thought the city had already allocated funds?

They really shouldn't be throwing around $ figures at this stage.

Also, before they talk about using the Future Fund, maybe they should read the legal purpose:
"the Alberta Future Fund is established as a notional account within the Heritage Fund for the purpose of supporting initiatives to provide long-term benefits to Albertans and the Alberta economy"

It would be a stretch to use it.
