I get a lot from that pic from that angle. A) Yahoo! Crane up, smallish footprint, huge elevator shaft, B) Google tower creates a building blob instead of nice density with distinct separation, C) the Aloft / Element looks like shit, it looks unfinished D) at least it adds some height north and extends the skyline, E) the Mexican CC is extraordinarily underwhelming, F) we need the height the Independent will bring to that western sector, G) Austin with the hills in the background and the river running through it is beautiful, H) this building will be more impressive than the Fairmont looking from northbound I35, I) because its worth repeating, Aloft / Element looks like shit. J) thank God for the Austonian, otherwise the skyline would look plateaued out. There's a lot of wasted vertical space opportunities.

What I get out of that photo is that the two guys working the library project must have moved on to 70 Rainey.

I agree with the Aloft - I like (sort of) the look from up close, but it looks terrible from this distance. I never saw that perspective of it before.

I think this also really brings to mind how different the Statesman lot will be when it's built out with taller(ish) buildings. That building is so short and squatty it's begging to be replaced...

Has anyone been by this site to see if they are working on the 2nd floor yet after re-re-breaking ground last summer? They're apparently not proud enough of their progress to post any updates on their social media sites.

Just drove by this morning, actually. Slow going, seems like. They're still working on first floor supports. I don't know the technical terminology but it looked like they still needed more cement to fill in the rebar pillar skeletons.

That's what I was afraid of. After all these months and with no significant excavation needed, very little has been constructed. 70 Rainey still seems to be smoke and mirrors. They were asking for $140 million in their presentation to Chinese investors last year, and I believe they "only" got ~$100 million. I'm not sure that they are ready to build this thing.

Maybe if they could just build a little more, in seven years we can have another Intel shell type implosion after we get a few acrobatic rope swinging performances out of it.

Right now it would be more like dominoes - just tip the first column over and watch them all go down.

In other words, if one project stops there could be repercussions for funding for in-the-pipeline projects and going forward for a decade. How long did the Intel shell happen?

After sitting at 5 floors, about half built, for 6 years with no buyers, it was imploded in February 25, 2007. The implosion was unspectacular and looked like a fail, although the demolition company said otherwise. Almost half of it looked like it was still standing after the explosion.

I have high hopes for this project, but it just seems the lack of construction workers on site. I drove past there not to long ago and only saw 3 workers. I was like really? Only 3 workers building this tower? I do wonder, with projects popping up left and right across the city it has me wondering if there's a labor shortage in Austin?

There's a fairly well publicized narrative that booming U.S. cities are seeing a construction worker shortage. But with that said, fully funded projects being built by reputable developers and top notch construction contractors are still getting it done.

Ironically, this Community Impact article was just posted this week.

I try to be skeptical at this point about perceived levels of activity at job sites - and whether that's an indicator of a project's stability. While Rainey's absolutely moving more slowly than we'd like -- so did ZaZa. And so did 5th and West at one point.

When you get a hole in the ground dug, and piers are starting to rise, you have to believe that funding's pretty far along if not complete.

This would be 8 month's worth of construction progress. At this rate the second floor should be U/C by mid-2018.

The pace of constructions seems to have picked up a bit.
