Looks really out of place. Better not use that at LeBreton.

Great to see Rideau St be built up, but there is no cohesive design to it - it's not a pretty stretch, gotta say.

Pion: "hey Boss, should we order dark grey balcony guards with smoky grey glass to match the rest of the building?"

Boss: "Heck no, we have all these extra balcony guards from that other project. Let just use these, we'll still rent the apartments at a ridiculous rate, AND we'll save at least $150 bucks per unit"

Where the f*ck do they get off on these things.

Are there any design details that someone can conjure up that show what it's SUPPOSED to be from the approved proposal?

We need to organize a protest lol

TBH I would take unfinished under side any day of the week, if instead they created more useful balconies here.

In a place that you can't use balconies 5 months of the year, they should at least put a glass enclosure around the entire thing. Also put a water drain in the damn thing if you are not doing it, the balconies here get entirely filthy and you are not even allowed to wash it with water.

I come from a country where balconies have water drainage, proper floors (not the bare concrete you get here), proper ceiling and fully enclosed glass:

1000% times than what I get at my condos here in Ottawa

I'll say, the Rideau facade could be worse. Certainly doesn't make up for the rest of it though. Man, I really feel that the more glass is used, the more guaranteed a project is to look decent. I know there are energy efficiency reasons against it but I wish developers here would just do it. If MTL can do it with their nearly identical climate, I don't see why we can't. It'd help us avoid more calamities like 1960 Scott and Trinity Rideau/Chapel.

Yeah, Rideau face is acceptable. King Eds face will one day be blocked by a Rimap tower (which so far isn't promising). Better than the Claridge Plazas, but still not great.

One other positive I'm holding out for is for the podium. It's been mostly hidden during construction but having a nice, mostly glass podium running all along Cumberland and Rideau (vs the previous parking lot) has to be a pretty significant improvement.

For sure. This will probably have by far the best ground floor of any modern building on Rideau between Dalhousie and King Edward.

Smile

Since the City of Ottawa is the Capital of By-Laws, we should start a petition to have all single family housing brick banned from new residential high-rise projects.

Its moreso the clear signs of efflorescence and extremely uneven curing (likely due to...no?... protection during laying of the brick?

I sure hope so! Could be a bit of a redeeming feature. This stretch of Rideau St (between Sussex and King Edward) is probably the densest, most vibrant Urban thoroughfare we have in Ottawa.
