I'm only using them as an example. The common misconception in North America is that the opera, symphony, ballet etc. are elitist and only for the well-off. They're not, especially here in Québec where they more accessible and therefore more appreciated by the general population.
I've always been a HUGE Habs fan yet they piss me off, not because they haven't won Stanley for a while, but because they're stuck in the NHL, which has become a typical North American entertainment 'commodity'. Private boxes, marketing and advertising (TV) rights are more important than the game these days and a glorious old franchise suffers because they have to follow suit in order to survive. That's the reality of 'The Game' in the 21st century and it's something that you have to accept when you live in a weak country like Canada, that looks to the U.S. for its daily dose of affirmation rather than being its own cat.
The Habs can't buck the NHL when the league is controlled from New York and the ROC just plays along, thinking that they'll be considered more 'world class' if they're up there with the Pittsburghs and Detroits of the world. Toronto will suck any c**k so long as their name is mentioned alongside 'New York' in the same press release. It makes them feel big despite the fact that New York considers them to be the HQ of branch plant north and nothing more. That pretty much makes Toronto useless as the Metropole of Canada and might explain why nobody likes it. It isn't exactly a leader, more of a copycat, and nobody respects a copycat.
I love music.. all music, and even though I prefer electronic and good old fashioned rock/punk, I've been to l'OSM and Opéra Montréal and was astounded and I hope to catch the ballet sometime. I can't wait to listen to one of the world's best symphony orchestras, conducted by one of the world's top conductors, in one of the world's top symphony halls. That'll be something, and that's the way that cities make their mark in the world; not by building green-glass condos and generic office buildings. You can baaaaaaa along with the rest of the sheep or you can do something that sets yourself apart. Setting yourself apart is what Montréal is doing with l'Adresse Symphonique and QdS and I love it!
