Ice District will be 'like nothing in North America,' says Katz Group Real Estate

BY JURIS GRANEY
FIRST POSTED: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2017 02:58 PM MDT | UPDATED: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2017 03:26 PM MDT

Edmonton media were given the chance to tour the 25-acre downtown Ice District redevelopment Tuesday morning. Reporter Juris Graney tagged along to see how the site is taking shape.

How’s it looking out there?

Construction work at Canada’s largest mixed-use sports and entertainment district is busy. Very busy. And that brings a lot of joy to Glen Scott, president of Katz Group Real Estate.

^ For a second I thought this was an image from a suburb. It's a real shame that the Jardins Windsor was built where it was.. but understandable. Montreal was desperate for any development not so many years ago...

At least it's a very clean and liveable area. Once the area is built out with Quad Windsor and maybe an additional ETS building, it'll be much less noticeable.

I recently took a few photos on a visit to Halifax. I didn't systematically try to find construction sites, but happened to capture a few of them:

The Roy

Another angle of the same construction site from the previous shot:

Argyle streetscaping with the Nova Centre on the right:

Queen's Marque

Queen's Marque again from the water. You can see the cofferdam construction used to keep out sea water:

With all the construction and glass in Halifax these days, it's starting to look like an east coast Vancouver.

They are beginning to restore the William Thomas facade, it was removed piece by piece.

I'm tempted to defend the jardins windsor once again: they are objectively uninspiring when sticking out like sore thumbs, but with further developments surrounding it eventually, they will fit in just fine.

If there's one set of buildings that I find distracting in this neighbourhood, its the 90's suburban townhouses built in cul-de-sacs literally next door. These will not adapt well with the oncoming 50-storey towers.

Any structure that hides at least part of the hideous bell centre facade gets a from me.

Damn! The forms were at this level on July 15th. They managed to put up 10 stories in less than 7 weeks (2 weeks construction holiday)
