How do we stackup?

With the opening of Skytrain Canada Line on August 17th, here's a look at how Metro Vancouver compares in Canada:

Ranked as shown (includes LRT, subways, excludes streetcars, trolley buses and commuter trains)

Track Km:
Vancouver - 68.5km of track, 3 lines
Toronto - 68.3km of track, 4 lines
Montreal - 66km of track, 4 lines
Calgary - 44.9km of track, 2 lines
Edmonton - 20.7km of track (as of 2010), 1 line
Ottawa - 8km of track (single), 1 line

Daily Ridership Estimates:
Toronto - 1.24 million per day
Montreal - 1 million per day
Vancouver - 371,000 per day*
Calgary - 297,000 per day
Edmonton - 55,000 per day**
Ottawa - 10,000 per day

Number of Stations
Toronto - 69 stations
Montreal - 68 stations
Vancouver - 48 stations
Calgary - 30 stations plus 10 one-way platforms downtown
Edmonton - 15 stations
Ottawa - 5 stations

*estimate includes Canada Line estimate of 100,000 per day plus Expo and Millenium at 271,000 per day

** expected to increase to 100,00 per day when SLRT is completly open in 2010

thanks for compiling this, but it's sort of misleading to suggest that reasonably comprehensive metro system that serves montreal's core is in any significant way comparable to the rail component of the vancouver regional transit network.

sigh... in other towns, especially in the u.s., towns draft plans then get the government to ante up. but the city of vancouver is too small and too constrained by the few revenue generation tools afforded it to build anything on its own, so the province/regional transportation authority is/are basically responsible for rapid transit. but that leads to perverse outcomes, like burnaby having more kms of rail track than vancouver, the evergreen line being built before the ubc line, a streetcar system that'll likely never happen.

montreal is drawing up plans for a street car system and a couple more metro stops in the east, and the province has no say about it, or even any real funding onus. meanwhile, vancouver's streetcar plan was effectively pre-vetoed by the organization of regional transportation.

was that a rant? i think so. i've got to get outside.

Lenght of track and number of stations isn't everything. You can have 100 kilometers of trackage and a station every 1500 meters, but it you have 4 car, 500 pers capacity trains running only one every 15 minutes you aren't going to have alot of people moving throughout the day.

After spending last weekend back down in NYC, I've decided I quite perfer the short and frequent skytrains to the 10 minute headway for the long-assed C line subway on a saturday afternoon in Manhatten. This hasn't been my only NYC trip that I noticed this, but it is the most recent.

I'll say slightly more than 12000 pphd for the total passengers
Its just that... the cars will be a lot more empty compared to now

I thought he was referring to capacity, not ridership.

Various sources peg TO's km of track as greater than 70km:

I would rather see a comparison of the entire transit system, including buses, etc. That would be a more complete picture of a city's success in terms of getting people out of their cars.

For example, the annual ridership for the entire transit system in 2008:

Toronto 521.7 million
[466.7 million TTC + 55 million GO]
TTC
GO

Montreal 382.5 million
STM

Vancouver 179 million
Translink

Calgary 95.3 million
Calgary Transit

So obviously we're doing better when it comes to transit than just the rail stats show.

True (annual) ridership per capita:

Montreal: 106
Toronto: 95
Calgary: 87
Vancouver: 85

Is that just Broadway or does that include Commercial Drive as well?

This is linked trip (boarded passengers), while all the others are unlinked trip (revenue passengers). The actual number for Vancouver is about 179 million.

No. Adding Commerical Drive will push the number up to 84,000.

Fixed that info. Thanks for making me aware of that. Although it does paint a much less rosy picture.

Anyways, while looking up that info, I found the following quote to be quite interesting:
Quote:
International benchmarking rated the Coast Mountain Bus Company the third most-efficient out of 12 of the world’s largest transit operations including New York, Paris and London. SkyTrain rated as North America’s most cost-effective in its class of intermediate capacity rail rapid transit systems.

Just wondering about the stats. Since Calgary is the only city with a free fare zone, how much of calgary's passenger numbers is due to the free passengers?
