I realize this is an old, old thread but I feel the need to reply. This does not look like urban decay at all - it looks neglected and dated. That's it. I have seen way worse in southern Ontario.

I don't expect anyone to believe this but in the mid 90's when I was a child the local mall in Cambridge (Ontario) had dirt floors in some sections with ill lit lights.

Hamilton, London Kitchener, pre-gentrified Hespler, Cambridge, Oshawa are much worse in terms of urban decay than this.

Flint is amazing.

All those old buildings pictured in the OP have since been demolished by the City of Brantford.

Well, there is indeed one side of Colborne Street that does not look (anymore) like urban decay, yes...

(edit: Doady beat me to it)

I think the title of this thread is accurate. For Canada, this would be considered fairly major decay. It's still nothing compared to the depths of despair that many US or Russian communities are in.

This is the town where Alexander Graham Bell's homestead was and where he invented the telephone?

If this is really the worst than Canada is clearly doing an excellent job as a country, unlike the U.S.

But I'm not sure why they demolished a whole row of buildings when there's new construction? Why not renovate them? Doesn't make sense.

It looks pretty bad to this Canadian. Yes there are other factors too, but suburban malls can do a lot of damage. West Edmonton Mall (North America's largest) killed my hometown in the 1980s and our core is only now recovering.
