When I originally heard about this stained glass installation I thought it was going to be generic religious scenes. It's too bad that the church itself was mostly destroyed and not reused more creatively, but it's good that this was saved. The tragic theme reminds me of Latin America or Spain.

One difference I notice between Vancouver and Halifax is that most of the public artwork in Halifax ties in with local history, which often goes back a century or more (the explosion is almost a "recent" event; my great grandmother lived through it and liked to talk about it). Here, a lot of the artwork is postmodern stuff that isn't very rooted to local history. There sometimes isn't a whole lot of craftsmanship involved in modern public art, so it can ultimately be very underwhelming.

Installation is under way for the monumental sculpture by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa on the new grand boulevard that replace the Bonaventure elevated expressway between Griffintown and Old Montreal.

Here's a fugly piece in Ottawa's Ogilvy Square. This was part of the project to turn part of Nicholas Street, between Rideau and Besserer, into a pedestrian plaza that ties into the Rideau Centre expansion and the 1908 Ogilvy façad(ism) knock-off restauration.

A few other, mostly terrible, art installations in the area can be seen on the link.

That Edmonton sculpture doesn't look too bad.......just gotta hope it doesn't get damaged at the base.

A new, ill-conceived spot for the OTTAWA sign. Or is it AWATTO?

How it's meant to be seen;

How people see it;

How is it different from the "TORONTO" in Nathan Phillips Sq, or any other freestanding city name sign?

The Ottawa sign with the one-way in the foreground is my favourite. That's gold, Jerry!

Montreal's dendrites is rad. Love it.

A new mural on Purity Factories. Purity makes all of the local confections - jam jams, lemon cream crackers, ginger snaps, peppermint knobs, syrup, etc.

And a mural on McBride's Hill downtown commemorating the Great Fire of 1892.

A few reasons. For one, the Ottawa sign can be seen prominently from both sides. In relation to that, it is not as obvious (in terms of background) which side someone is "supposed" to photograph it from.

In Toronto, the front of the sign has City Hall in the background, a city landmark. On the other side, you have a concrete arcade. Not much to look at.

Another reason is that the Ottawa sign reversed spells something that could actually be a word (AWATTO). Toronto reversed (OTNOROT), is gibberish, not to mention that two letters are upside-down.

The same can be said of the "I amsterdam" sign.

Finally, everyone knows Toronto, or Amsterdam, or Panama... Ottawa is relatively unknown outside Canada, therefore having the name reversed plastered on social media doesn't help our case. On the other hand, some might say that their ins no such thing as bad publicity.

In any case, have you ever seen a picture of any of those other signs reversed? I haven't.
