Aerial photos of Ottawa at night, July 2014

After 20 years or so of aerial photography I finally got up at night last winter and wanted to do the same in summer. Winter is easy, summer is hard. Much less light.

Below is a 10-shot winter pano of the Ottawa area looking north and east.

Summer for the next three. Below is Parliament Hill with the lightshow just beginning.

Below is the War Museum with Bluesfest in its front yard. Entrance to subway under construction is well lit. Bluesfest laser show on the 5th kept us grounded!

Canadian Museum of Nature and environs a couple of kM south of Parliament Hill.

How do you take night shots that aren't blurry from the motion?

Cessna 172 so it's slow(ish), the ground doesn't go by too fast. 3100 foot altitude, so the ground doesn't go by too fast. High ISO, 3000-6000. Fast lens, 1.4 to 2.8 . Vibration reduction works great too. Also, small image size. The original size of the D800 shots I took are all a little soft, or worse, but at 1600px wide they're not too bad. Also key is that at night the air is very smooth. Flight is usually smoother than ground idle.

On the other hand this happens too. Lots.
