UberEATS launches food delivery service in Ottawa

Controversial alternative-taxi service Uber is looking to change up the world of food delivery.

The company kicked off its UberEATS application in Ottawa as of 10 a.m. on Wednesday. The app, which it started testing in Toronto almost a year ago before introducing it to a few U.S. markets, provides a menu of food choices and prices.

The service is offered from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

The company said it has partnered with 50 restaurants in Ottawa to kickstart the service, including Art-Is-In, Golden Palace, Dat Sun, El Camino, and Fauna.

To get food, a person opens the app, picks an item and agrees to a delivery charge.

Uber said for the launch of the service in Ottawa that delivery charges will be waived. However, in other markets delivery fees have ranged from $4 to $6. Delivery will be curbside, meaning the driver won’t bring the food up to apartments or offices indoors.

For the launch, the company is only offering delivery primarily in the downtown core. Boundaries for the service stretch are from the St. Laurent Shopping Centre, west to a little past Woodroffe Avenue and south to Baseline Road.

Uber has been looking to expand its service offerings to take use of the massive fleet of privately owned vehicles that utilize its app.

In October, Ottawa technology darling Shopify announced a partnership with Uber to handle rush deliveries for its merchants.

Uber operates in 60 countries. Shopify supports more than 100,000 businesses in 150 countries. By using Uber‘s drivers, a business can take an online order, package it and then toss it in the back of a waiting Uber vehicle for immediate delivery.
