I'm really excited for this project to be complete. I was visiting a client the other that just moved into The Hudson II and they can't believe how dead the area is after 5:00pm. I'm hoping with this project along with the others in the area are going to start improving the nightlife in Centretown.

That won't happen for a while I'm afraid, but the city IS making some progress towards having a better nightlife in Centretown. If we can get more people living in the area, more late-night business on Bank St. and some decent draws to the area, it could be really nice.

Concern Over Downtown Development
Josh Pringle
Thursday, May 6, 2010

Somerset Councillor Diane Holmes says she's concerned a proposed condo development in downtown Ottawa has been reduced to a "monolithic, overbearing and featureless box."

In a report for the Planning and Environment Committee, Holmes says a "fresh urban design peer review process is required" involving a panel of out-of-town consultants.

Claridge Homes is building a three tower development at Metcalfe and Nepean Streets, which includes two-27 storey buildings.

The project also includes a grocery store on the ground level, a daycare and an "outdoor cinema."

City Staff are recommending the Planning and Environment Committee approve amendments to the zoning to allow the grocery store.

The Downtown Urban Design Review Panel has expressed "comfort" with the overall building design, location and massing.
This forum is becomming an exhibit of actually how retarded our city councillors are. This is actually one of the better designs that Claridge has come up with over the last couple years and the condos as well as the retail (likely grocery store) would be an amazing addition to the neighbourhood. It actually almost looks like a tower (which is unique in Ottawa) and, if Holmes has her way, it will be reduced to the "monolithic box" that she claims to fear. Can you imagine how aweful it would be to live on the same block as this:

Idiot.

That render is fantastic! It looks kinda like some of the projects that have gone up in the GTA recently (Thinking smaller-scale Maple Leafe Square twin towers).

Nice find, even if it's not what they have in mind...

Apparently according to the Sun, one of the concerns would be the addition of 10 trucks per day in the area due to the grocery store. OOOOHH BIG DEAL!!!!

10 trucks a day, huh?
Let's see. How about close King Edward Avenue for a month and send all the interprovincial traffic down Elgin or Metcalfe instead. Then see how she feels about 10 trucks per day.

Watching city council from beyond the city is like watching someone else's two year old running with scissors.

Thanks. Please make them stop.
I'm willing to move back and vote against Ms. Holmes if that's what it'll take.

Just visited the sales site. The salesman mentioned that there had been talks with Sobeys, so it looks like that will be the grocery store.

Centretown condo towers to include grocery store
By JON WILLING, CITY HALL BUREAU
Last Updated: May 11, 2010 12:15pm
http://www.ottawasun.com/news/ottawa.../13906401.html

Centretown is one step closer to getting a new grocery store.

Claridge Homes is building a three-tower condo complex at the corner of Nepean and Metcalfe streets and it wants to put a 25,000 squ. ft. grocery store to anchor the ground floor.

The planning and environment committee approved the plan Tuesday. Council will be asked to approve the plan May 26.

Two of the towers will have 27 storeys and the third will have seven storeys. It would be a mainly residential development with 453 units and six levels of underground parking. A public plaza along Metcalfe St. has also been included in the plan.

Claridge is removing an outdoor cinema as part of its zoning application. The developer had originally considered operating an outdoor cinema while the buildings were being constructed.

Somerset Coun. Diane Holmes and Capital Coun. Clive Doucet voted against allowing a retail food store at the development. Holmes, the area councillor, is mainly concerned with the amount of truck traffic coming to the grocery store, especially on Nepean St. Holmes said she understands residents want more grocery stores downtown, but the problem with this proposal is the tricky truck access.

Claridge says it has lined up a tenant for the grocery store, but did not reveal the identity to the committee.

There are currently only a couple of food stores of significant size in the downtown.

If rejected by Council, OMB hearing would begin in July

Shocked no...successful yes. Stranger thinks have happened then this zoning change being rejected. But there is effectly no way the it would be upheld at the OMB with both City Staff and PEC approving it. Not to mention that the reason would be for minor traffic issues on major city streets.

Cheers,
Josh

Council OK's Centretown groceteria

By JON WILLING, City Hall Bureau

Centretown will get a new grocery store.

City council voted to accept a plan that will put a 25,000-sq.-ft. grocery store on the ground floor of a condo development at Nepean and Metcalfe streets.

Claridge Homes is building a three-tower complex, with two of the towers having 27 storeys and the third having seven storeys. There will be 453 units.

The tenant for the grocery store has not been announced.

I haven't been this excited since Council approved a Portrait Gallery for the same spot.
