Memphis Redbirds complete scoreboard installation in time for home opener

The Memphis Redbirds have completed installation of their new 3,600-square-foot, high-definition scoreboard just in time for the team’s opening night Friday. The 1.4 million pixels board weighs more than 20 tons and will be the largest board in minor league baseball. It surpasses the 2,640 square-foot board at Coca-Cola Field, home of the Buffalo Bison.

]"If they (the owners) have $8 million in the club including renovations then that is now, just land cost, of $36 a foot which is too expensive for residential. The owners purchased the club to be a tennis club and I am certain that is what they will do. They have done a great job thus far on improving the club. I think we will end up getting a 250 series tennis tournament and still have the same players that we had for the 500 series and they probably got money selling the 500 series which will go back into the club to improve the club. Just a guess

Negotiations between the steamboat company and the city of Memphis began in March 2011. By August, the two sides had agreed to terms: The Great American Steamboat Company would operate out of Memphis, giving Beale Street Landing a permanent tenant, while Memphis would loan the company the remaining funds necessary to launch. "It's amazing that we were working on the Beale Street Landing at the time," Wharton says, just as the Great American Steamboat Company was looking for a place for its headquarters. "We are a river city. The steamboat represents entertainment and travel at its best, and this is one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that came along at the right time."

I remember getting into a long argument on another forum a year or 2 back about an article I posted that claimed Beale Street was the state of Tennessee's #1 tourist attraction. The only thing brought up that could possibly topple that was Smoky Mountains Nat'l Park. Don't kid yourself folks, year over year, almost nothing beats Beale Street. More development is coming and it will only get bigger. Every city across the country wants or has tried to build a Beale or Bourbon, but the history, grit & mystique is required to back it up. Not going to happen.

I just wish that the city would have never torn down the homes/pubs and blues halls further East on Beale. Never experienced seeing them myself, because I'm way too young, but from what I've heard, they added a lot of character and soul to Beale.

Years ago, I'd imagine, but not familiar with those myself. Although, master plans will see redevelopment extend that way.

greatshot of the ball park. that should be in some of the PR info on the city. beautiful colors and great features seem to burst out to the eye. that green and light yellow brick work or pavement is super. it really captures so much energy for this section of the entertainment district downtown. again, kudos to the photographer.

I'm anxious to see how much lower Southwest's fares will be priced here, and over all activity here by Southwest due to a number of factors, including the fact that AirTran only operated 4 flights from Memphis a day, Nashville is a target city for Southwest and they have a large operation there, and the fact that Delta already has such a large presence in Memphis. Those facts just lead me to believe that Southwest won't have a very large presence here and that fares won't drop much lower.

I couldn't say how much it will affect pricing, but I'd expect much more than 4 dailies to ATL. To compete with Delta @ MEM, Southwest will have to hit the ground running in a big way. Also, they wouldn't continue this market for 4 dailies, they would've pulled out altogether. Although, a lot of flights could go thru Nashville & Little Rock, possible. Larry Cox & Arnold Perl say talks have been very interesting, but refuse to comment. If they do come into MEM in a big way, O&D traffic in Nashville & Little Rock will get hammered while it surges @ MEM. Southwest knows there is a huge mass of business & leisure travelers who are salivating over this and I've even heard rumors that they might take over an entire concourse that Delta just let the leases run out on. I believe concourse "C". No other carrier has had that chance and the time is right for both Memphis & Southwest.

any new on the promised decision on the chisca hotel project? i understand that it is under secret negotiations w/ the city council. to me, legally questionable, if money, in part, is public and to be co-mingled w/ private funds. any information on the marriott addition and the hilton in the south district? what about the indigo, i think their past 6 years for having completed their project.

i don't know why anyone would want to tie down a project w/ the promise that 15-25% of it has to be given to minority black or women firms, especially if they do not have the expertise to do the work. some of the announced projects are beyond schedule.
