It's a very busy site with three cranes in operation. Very prominent when landing on YVR.

Photo I took today after the installation, this morning, of construction crane number 4 (the white one). This crane is the one for the condo tower going up on the corner of 70th and Cornish.

Wow, with four cranes that is starting to look like a busy site! This and Marine Gateway should look pretty impressive when landing on YVR. Looking forward to Saturday and driving by this site.

Looking good. I really hope this development is a catalyst for the densification of the area. It always seemed really shabby and underdeveloped for such an important street and a gateway into Vancouver from the airport.

Agreed Jebby! I always been embarrassed by the entry to our city from the airport. A first time visitor gets no sense of Vancouver, the stretch from the Arthur Laing bridge to around 67th Ave has always made for a terrible first impression. This project will certainly begin to change that.

Underdeveloped, sure, but shabby not. There are definitely more shabby and rundown areas elsewhere in Vancouver.

It is still good to see the area getting such a major improvement and hopefully more will follow. It's only shame that the whole are is so dependent on rubber wheel traffic with major street running through it. Arbutus streetcar would be such a great thing to have...

This project is starting to make a good impact when viewing it from the Canada Line bridge and the south shore of the Fraser.

Some pics by me today:

Of course there are worse areas than Granville around 70th ave, but I definitely would call it shabby. It's just full of strip malls and crappy retail in 1-2 story buildings.

Nice, thanks for posting.

Looks like the model - the 2nd tower (white crane) must be the later phase.

From this angle its easy to see why a thicket of Stop Marpole Rezoning signs (like those on the right) have sprung up throughout the area:

Looks great!! I wonder what the fate of the branding for the Safeway store will be now that Sobey's had completed, as of November 6th, it's takeover of Canada Safeway?

I recall Sobeys saying they'd retain the Safeway name (bvut with the US company still a going concern, I wonder how long that would last?)
They have retained the Thrifty's name though ...

I believe Sobeys only has the rights to operate as Safeway for an interim period. I imagine there is quite a discussion going on internally as to how to brand all of the new stores they've acquired, whether they are Thrifty's, Sobeys or something new. My understand is that Canada Safeway kept their rights to their name just in case.

In other parts of the world the Safeway name was retained for years, long after the U.S parent unloaded it. In the UK the name was retained from 1987 when it was bought by a UK based company, until it was purchased by Morrisons in 2004. in Australia it's finally being done away with and it's been under control of Woolworth Australia since the 80's.

I guess it's more critical in Canada as it's close to the U.S. parent's market
