In case you haven't seen it yet - the opening video is awesome!

Four easy games to start the season, tonight is their first true test.

We passed that test with flying colors, Talbot played well as did Looch. The Blues goalie made quite a few huge stops, could have easily been 4-1 or 5-1.

I'll agree they passed the test last night but they still have work to do. They've been outshot in four of five games this year so need to wok on that. Tyler Pitlick has been a very pleasant surprise this season so far. Jesse Puljujarvi scratched again last night. If the team continues to play reasonably well they would do best by sending him down to get some playing time in Bakersfield.

As a devout, but jaded Oilers' fan, kept waiting for what I fully expected to be the inevitable collapse, clutching misery from the hands of success.

So, very pleasantly surprised.

Early days, but considering our already-lengthy list of injuries, impressive. And now days off before Winnipeg.

^^ Even though we were out shot 35-23, the Oilers won the scoring chance battle 28-26 and the high danger chances 16-11.

Hitchcock was quoted in the St Loo Post Dispatch saying the shot totals were misleading as the Blues were, for the most part, kept to the outside.

Clearly not Yak, but otherwise ....

The Buzz Is Back in Edmonton? The Oilers Must Have a Prodigy

Ben Shpigel

EDMONTON, Alberta — At stoplights around town, motorists honk at the owner of a 2009 black Ford F-150 and snap photographs of its license plate, the one that reads, “McDavid,” in red uppercase letters. Then they speed up, straining to see the driver through the window.

Could it be? Could it really be Connor McDavid, the 19-year-old prodigy charged with restoring the woebegone Edmonton Oilers to prominence?

Because he is polite, the driver, who is not McDavid but rather a 31-year-old part-owner of a plumbing and heating company named Raffaele Papaianni, always smiles and waves at those hoping to glimpse hockey royalty. And why not? Like them, he just wanted to believe again.

Even if it is tempered, optimism does abound throughout northern Alberta, where 10 consecutive postseasons have passed without the Oilers’ presence, the longest current streak in the N.H.L. Across that decade of misery, masochism and mismanagement, Edmonton toiled through several unsuccessful phases of rebuilding, garnering three No. 1 picks before a fourth gifted them McDavid, a generational talent — “once-in-a-lifetime,” said General Manager Peter Chiarelli — who conjures the greatest Oiler of them all, Wayne Gretzky.

Nice article, but could have done without the “We don’t have mountains or the beach, we’ve got the team" comment, reinforcing to the world the notion that the Oilers are only thing that Edmonton has going for it and the only thing tying into the city's fate. It certainly seemed that way during the Gretzky era. There's more to a city than professional sports, people. A city of 1 million people should be beyond this mindset.

agreed on the "nice article" although for many people outside of western canada (and many people in western canada for that matter) no one cares about any of those other things - at least not yet - so it is "we've got the team".

on another front, i'm not positive (no one on the outside is) but it's my understanding that the "he" in regard to the "front-office overhaul that detonated the organization’s culture of cronyism and precipitated a series of personnel moves" should probably refer to bobby orr more than connor mcdavid.

Ah, guy who races out to get a personalized MCDAVID plate, then refuses to put it on till we actually draft him .... I'll cut him some slack!

Don't know whether to laugh or cry, but while Canada's own National Post takes every chance it can to slag Big E ....

We've always done pretty good on the rare occasions the NYT finds us.

I recall a NYT article years back by one of their reporters who came into the city on a night it was -40. The story went - what are all these Edmonton wimps so scared of ...offering to get me a cab for a five block walk.

Later, he describes getting a block and a half away when, blammo, -40 hits him ... lists all the symptoms of ohmyghodit'sfreakincolddddd

Ended the piece saying -40 is mighty rare in Edmonton and in fact winters here are usually pretty bearable (when you just know the Post wouldn't have bothered).

Was screaming expletive-deletes galore at Madden in the eighth, but finally the Cubbies won out.

For all the wrong reasons, truly a Game 7 for the ages.

Good night for the Oil.
McJesus gets a hat trick in Dallas!
Joker plays with McJesus, gets 2 points.
Drake debuts, gets an assist.
Russell is back - and notice that the team hit the losing skid once he went down.

p.s. I know this is primarily a construction nerd forum but let's keep the sports thread going here, guys. The sports threads in C2E, like everything else there, is being dominated by clueless idiots.

Its subtle....but very key. Good eye.

Mcdavid had a good game. But his hattie was sloppy. Not any structured play on any goal. But I will take the win
